I can't really answer the question about your thighs Emma, but I am thinking that if you're going to be pedalling out the kilometres, you should sign up for Lizzie's Around the World challenge and get motivated to shrink those thighs :)

I was managing to clock up 100K's/week on my exercise bike, before it died and I'm sure you could do the same. So join us on our trip, we need you :)

The best way to get toned on a bike or any other sport or exercise is to enjoy what you're doing. I used to cycle to work and back, through central London, a round trip of around 25 miles and when I came home and eaten my dinner, I used to go out cycling with my wife for another 10 miles or so. We done it, purely for the pleasure of doing it :)

If you can find a way of including cycling into your daily routine, then you will gain considerable benefit. Also, it depends on how much effort you expend, a quiet trundle won't yield such good results as plenty of short dashes. The things that really push you to the limits on a bike are wind and hills.

It's worth looking on Facebook to see if there are any cycle groups in your area too. Cycling in company at a reasonable pace can be so much fun. In my area, we tend to have quite a lot of charity cycles too and these are brilliant, as you can just go at your own pace.

The key word though is, enjoyment.

Good luck :)

PS This is a very good site I used to use all the time. Sorry if you already know about it :) sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map

Welcome to cycling.

I have not been out for a few years now but the wheels will come out in 2016 again. You will find that your lower half will tone up and with a few hills thrown in your heart will notice it as well and all for the better.

I used to ride to central London from Wimbledon and it was a killer for the first few months so please persevere.

Regarding your thighs I cannot comment ! but ensure you do some stretching exercises and all time to recover. I suggest a ride every other day at first increasing distance each time. If you can join a group or a safety class i.e. ROSPA so much the better. After that if not cycling to work then select some safe routes and use these especially in the summer months.

Good Luck
