You don't say whether you are T1 or T2. I am overweight and T2 diabetic on metformin slow release. I have yoyo dieted for years and for me the answer is lowering carbs (your diabetic team can help with this) and I've got the carbs and cals book by Chris Cheyette from Amazon (there's also an app). You don't need to go mad and reduce your carbs to nothing,

I suggest you also have a look at the Diabetes UK website site and facebook page, they have excellent advice and can point you in the direction of their on line educational tools.

Adjust your portion sizes and if you can try and get some exercise in, people talk a lot about Low carb high fat diets and they do work for some people but we are not medically trained on this forum and so never start a "diet" without talking to your GP, especially as you have a serious medical condition. I can't do the LCHF because of the effect high fat has on my tummy for instance and so I, personally don't recommend it unless advised by a medic.

I exercise every day, I have a body blade (an exercise tool) and also I do Leslie Sansone on line walking videos (can't at the moment as have a knee problem) but we also now have a dog so I get at least one walk a day. Another thing I do is to follow freedom eating which is eating when hungry (unless you are on insulin and hypo when you need to have something quick). I read about it in a book called Till The Fat Lady Slims 2.0 The When diet by Debbie Flint, its available on Amazon. Its for men and women and the principals are easy to follow. Although the book is semi-autobiographical, Debbie is very motivational about how she found the Freedom eating way. I'm not saying it is still easy to lose the weight, I'm losing it slowly and that suits me but it is a way that suits me. I do have days when I slip (yesterday wasn't the best!) but its a marathon not a sprint.

Check with your diabetic team and be honest with them about what you are eating and ask them to help and support you too. I'm lucky I have an amazing diabetic nurse and she is very supportive.

Hope you get things together and bring your diabetes under control. If you are T1you know you cannot reverse it, if you are T2 you can get total control, but you will always be a diabetic, just one with excellent control - that's what we all aim for.

My mum is type 2 and husband type 1 the best way is find what ur triggers are like if ur sugars go up with bread or not this way u know what to keep away from and then can have healthier options my mums at min is rice cauliflower as the carbs set her off so she makes rice from cauliflower

Talk to your diabetic team as ceejayblue has suggested, and also have a look for a recent program on BBC 1, called Doctor in the House.

In the first program a type 2 diabetic man was helped to lose weight and get his diabetes under control by cutting out all processed foods with added sugar, and refined carbohydrates, like breakfast cereals. He increased his veg to 5 a day, with just one fruit, and started walking every day. His health improved enormously.

This is a newspaper article on the program.
