I saw an old post that read 'who is up for a challenge of only drinking 8 glasses of water every day for the next 2 weeks?' Any one wants to join me as I am not drinking enough and need support desperately and than hopefully my weight will shift . Thanks for your support.

i'm in. How does water help lose weight?

gillyflower88 profile image
gillyflower88 in reply to elin15

I,d be interested why it helps lose weight too

There's many different reasons, gillyflower.

If you keep your body hydrated, it doesn't feel the need to hang on to fluid, causing bloating and weight gain.

Hydration is required for the kidneys to function correctly, dehydration means the liver has to help out and that diverts it from it's function of fat busting.

Dehydration slows metabolism and makes you feel sluggish and therefore less likely to be active.

Dehydration can cause constipation.

Thirst can be confused with hunger, which can lead to overeating.

I hope that answers your question :)

Hi Bakersdozen,

Drinking 2 litres of water a day sounds like an impossible task, but it's surprising how quickly you get used to it and funnily enough, once your body gets used to it, you feel thirstier than you ever did before.

I keep a 2 litre bottle of water in the fridge and decant it into a smaller spouted bottle. I just sip on it through he day and refill the bottle every night. Doing it like this, there's no risk of fooling yourself into believing you've drunk the correct amount when you haven't :)

Good luck with your challenge :)

I thought one supposed drink a lot. My problen is that I was eating instead of drinking so I thought if I post a thread than I will drink more than 1 cup a day of water and eat less.

I think it's an excellent idea :)

Hi Moreless

It's a bit worrying to hear that you are feeling thirsty after drinking 2 litres a day. This may possibly be a sign of health problems. Perhaps check the NHS website.

morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to Penel

Thanks for your concern Penel, but I'm absolutely fine. I'm doing a lot more exercise these days and that makes me recognise thirst and not confuse it with hunger. I suspect the way I worded my last post was a little less than clear :)

How many pints of water would that be

Yes I'm up for that challenge

I used to drink 8 pints a day (was skinny)

Then drank 4 (steadily put on weight)

Now drink 2 which is not enough

Bonni1 profile image
Bonni1 in reply to Bonni1

It's 3.6 pints in 2 litres I will start tomorrow for 2 weeks Friday to Friday

Great idea

Perhaps check the NHS advice on drinking water. They recommend about 1 litre a day. It is possible to affect your health by drinking too much water.

I only drink 8 glasses of water a day and no other fluids.

What is a glass. One pint or 1 litre half a litre

A glass is 200ml according to the European Food Safety Authority and supported by the NHS.

Just a quick tip. You don't actually need to physically drink 2 litres because although you are supposed to consume that much in a day, some of your food contains water.

Your best option is to drink until your urine is clear. Do not go beyond that as you could reduce your sodium levels which is not good.

Good luck peeps

That is exactly what am doing is drinking until my urine is clear but only thanks to this amazing forum!

I already do drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day because of the drugs I am on and also because I hear so many men struggle when the go to the toilet with prostrate issues. I am not just on about older men too!

Many of the men I know in my circle of friends and family as they reach their fifties sixties have prostrate trouble and operations. Also several have had prostrate cancer. I cannot understand why people insist on not drinking enough during the day, or drinking alcohol, tea and coffee and thinking they have had a drink! These are all damaging your liver and not helping it.

Sorry off my soap box now … please do drink lots of water it helps so many of your organs and does help with weight loss too. Your brain gets confused between the concept of hungry and thirsty, so having lots of water to drink helps you between meal times.

Hi Johnny, I'll pick up on your reference to visits to the loo. I'm 62, have tried this & that over the years and have now settled on whats best for me. The 2 litres of plain water a day doesn't really suit me due to the excessive loo visits, which does cause frustration sometimes, luckilly us blokes can have more opportunities to relieve ourselves ! I'll have approx 1 to 2 pints of plain water proir to leaving the house in the morning, other fluids consumed over the day will take me over the 2 litres. If I consume too much, particularly late in the day, I'll be up once or twice disturbing my beauty sleep :-) As mentioned about the colour of urine, mine's darker first thing, but over the day it's straw coloured.

im in but this is easy for me - I only really drink water (low cal hot choc if I need a fix about once a week) I drink about 4+ litres of water a day. I literally cannot go anywhere without my water bottle but I was like that when I was putting on weight so its not going to affect my weight lol

also downsize to drinking the water and having a small bladder is the frequent bathroom breaks lol
