Trouble with frying an egg ....

Hi all, I am unsure how to total up my calories when frying. If I use (say) a teaspoon of olive oil to fry an egg, do I add the oil (40Kcal) to the fried egg total or does the 'fried egg' include the oil? I am a newbie so know nothing!

Thanks

I account for the oil and the egg, i.e. 40cals for oil plus 70cals for egg. There may be calorie amounts available on myfitnesspal or similar that show the full cals for 'a fried egg', but I've tended to go by the actual ingredients, to be absolutely sure.

Cheers Ruth - unless I get a flood of people saying 'just include the fried egg' total I'll follow your lead. Fried egg on toast was one of my favourite breakfasts but its really high in calories when butter on a piece toast is included - about 300 calories :( .... and that alone won't keep me going until lunchtime.

Have you discovered fry light the '1 cal spray'? If you have a good non stick frying pan you can fry an egg with that. Also try spreading the oil around with kitchen roll so half is removed, i.e. only 20cals of your 40cal tsp of oil will still be in the pan. Try to stretch your cals to two eggs, by spreading the butter thinly on your toast, and add a few mushrooms/cherry tomatoes to the pan too, any veg you can add will help keep you full too.

Also see what others say, there are lots of good ideas floating around on here :)

1 cal is fine, bit too chemical for me, the Filip bolero spray has about 7 cals a squirt, my preferred choice

Or can poach, crack an egg into lightly greased cling film (spray oil is great for this again), twist it closed and drop into boiling water for 4-5 mins

I prefer to fry eggs in pure butter, but only need a tiny amount, less than 1/2 teaspoon in a good non stick pan. I let the butter melt then use a pastry brush to distribute it round the pan, fry the egg gently then carefully turn it over with a spatula to cook the White on the other side so there's no runny white round the yolk ( bleeurgh) but the yolks still soft inside☀️

Yes, I like the sound of that and will give it a go. Thanks

I often scramble mine, just whisked eggs , 2 add a dash of milk, add Engevita on top

(brewers yeast) and on toast.

Soak pan in boiling water, washing powder or liquid, so much easier to clean!
