Advice needed on Macro nutrients please

Hi All

Do you try to hit your macro nutrients goal every day?

Does it have much effect on weight management?

I calorie count but don't always hit my macros exact, just wondering if anyone had a opinion on this or any advice to offer please?

Hi Mandy_ydnam,

Personally speaking, I do try to hit my macro nutrient goals each day, and I try to ensure I balance each meal and snack with all three macro nutrients whenever I can. When I analyse the macronutrient content of my week, using Myfitnesspal app on the weekends - I usually take a look at the graphs in the 'records' section, I notice that I tend to slightly over-eat both carbohydrates and fats, but am usually eating the recommended amount of protein. I eat complex carbs such as wholegrain rice and pasta, and I avoid refined carbs (white goods such as sugar, flour, rice and pasta) as much as I can. I do quite well in terms of eating the required fibre content per day - and I always try to eat lots of vegetables and some fruits, trying to achieve a rainbow of colours on the plate whenever I can.

I have been doing this for a long time, and I was originally in the obese category regarding BMI (I was 18 stone 8 pounds at my largest, and a size 18). I am currently in the healthy BMI (weighing 13 stone 5.2 pounds today, and a size 14). I am 6 feet 1 inch tall. I'm pleased to have maintained my weight loss, and I am hoping to lose a few more pounds to get down to 12 stone 7 pounds.

I would say that eating a balanced diet including all the macronutrients is really healthy, and I would recommend it. I think the NHS 12 week plan is excellent as a framework, and contains lots of good advice and information.

I am currently eating quite a few 'total calories' - in that I had an average of 2,470 last week, but I am exercising quite a bit, and my average daily net calories were 1,584.

I would like to wish you success with your weight loss journey, and I hope you'll get lots of replies to your question about macronutrients, as I think it's a good thing to consider. People may have similar or different views on it, but I wanted to share my own thoughts, as I think it's a really relevant topic.

Lowcal :-)

carbs to fat to protein ratio and vitamins were very important to me when I was building muscles and I will probably go back to that at some point but personally for now I go by "ish" and don't count it exactly, like I used to do when doing diet under muscle building regime. I will try to do quite balanced diet ensuring I have everything body needs but not as strictly as my goal for now is just to lose excess- more of going by memory. Once I decide i want to build muscularity back then I will turn into counting carbs/fats and protein again.

Although it is very good routine to do as you know exactly what your body is getting.

I have researched more and have now set my daily calorie goal and macro goals, and planned my meals to fit into this. Been supermarket shopping so all I need to do now is stick to it.

Fingers crossed
