Gall Bladder Removal

Hi - I had my gall bladder removed about 20 years ago, and have struggled with my weight since then. Does the removal of this organ make it harder to loose weight ( particularly around the tummy area)?

This is just another sample size of one anecdote: my Mum had hers removed 5 years ago and has lost weight since. I don't know whether the two things are connected though. She does eat absolutely heaps of linseeds - because she worries about not absorbing healthy fats well any longer. She also takes some vitamins.

A quick google suggests that the worry about gall bladder removal is that you don't absorb healthy fats and fat soluble vitamins properly. So maybe you too could try getting more omega 3 into your diet and less of the bad fats (trans, saturated etc) so they don't compete for absorption.

Thanks - I will look into this further.

I have been doing the NHS Welling being exercise & weight loss class for the past 14/15 weeks & lost nearly half a stone, but I'm trying so hard & being reasonabally good & am lucky to loose a quarter of a pound per week.

Having no gallbladder should not affect your weight either way in the long term.

Most people don't have issues with eating a normal diet after, the essential difference is that you no longer have a store of bile, you still continue to make bile and that bile should be more than enough for digestion of a normal diet.

I had my Gallbladder out 2 years ago and apart from a few minor issues in the few weeks post op (to be expected) I've had no issues with the types of foods I can eat, in fact my diet is quite high in saturated fat and everything works as expected I am pleased to say :)

I just remembered - she eats heaps of fennel too since the op - a couple of bulbs each day. She says it helps her digestion and stops her eating pudding. I've tried fennel too - it does get rid of food cravings for me. But it is kind of expensive, sadly.

Well done on losing the half stone and sticking with the diet despite how hard it is. I hope things get easier.

Thanks for advice & encouragement ( I forgot to mention also lost 2 stone just over a year or two ago) - just finding the next stone or two so difficult despite doing more excercise and really trying hard to eat healthy - I think it gets a bit harder when you get older - ( now aged just over 60 & under 5ft) - but I will keep trying 😏
