Ok, first time in 5 months I have succumb to cake 2 days running. So annoyed with self , basically husband baked a cake with kids, i felt down and lost will power. I know it sounds dramatic but am an all or nothing person and I don't want this to be slippery slope. Why could i not resist ...i dont know.

Motivation to move on please

Don't beat yourself up about it. As you say, you have been good previously - and you WILL again! Don't be hard on yourself, we all have our down times. Just remember why you started this healthy way of life and start again from now x negative thoughts will just make you feel worse.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

Don't ban food. Make friends with it.

Hi Vickster5,

I didn't realise that you've felt down about eating that cake - it can be very hard to 'resist' if you don't give yourself permission to indulge now and again, and Dollyfrog made a good point regarding making friends with food.

Cake doesn't need to be your enemy - it's possible to just have a small piece as part of a balanced meal plan, and then you're not denying yourself. I find that trying to home bake using healthy ingredients can be helpful, and freezing excess pieces of cake so they're not readily available. Can be too tempting to see a whole cake sitting there, but if you have to de-frost a small piece, then that's a different matter.

Don't be too hard on yourself, you achieved a good weight loss this week despite allowing yourself that cake two days running. The Banana Bran fruit cake in the NHS weight loss pages is really good.

Hope you have a great week.

I think its something we all go through, ive noticed it happen to me lately, i think its because we focus so much when we first start that after a while once we start feeling better we ease up a bit and our focus slips. Keeping that dedication is difficult as life and temptations can get in the way. I find reminding myself why im doing this helps me when i start to feel like that. I also look at myself in the mirror may sounds odd but reminds me how far ive come and where i want to get to. Remind yourself of your goals and the reasons behind them they are still valid and important. A little indulgence now and then wont ruin your efforts, get back on track and you will be fine. All the best

Thanks, yes is about keeping that focus, strange thing was I had been to docs about something else, told him about my weight loss and he was pleased and then did that a few days later!

two bits of cake ? It's not the end of the world. It might not even affect your weight, and if it does - so what. If you start again, you know you can lose weight, cos you've done it before. If you give up, you KNOW you'll put it all back on again.

You choose.

I agree with everyone else. No need to beaat yourself up because you had a piece of cake. You recognised that its not good for you but its a treat. The empty calories you have eaten now needs to be worked off. Walk a little further, exercise a little more, those calories wont even register but you have done the sensible thing and got rid of the calories you over indulged in and were happy to eat when you chose to eat them. Now you are unhappy about them, get rid of them. Simple.

Can I add something about beating ourselves up and this "all or nothing behaviour"? I wonder if we beat ourselves up and tell ourselves that somehow we're "failures" when it comes to overeating because it's a cycle of self-fulfilling prophesy. Maybe we think" Aha... I knew it wouldn't work. Here's the proof... I've fallen off the wagon again. Just like last time. So I may as well throw the towel in, and empty the kitchen cupboards whilst I'm at it. Oh and by the way, now that I've failed and feel really really bad I may as well have a piece of cake to cheer myself up..."
