I would say that to find out your calories, keep a diary of how many calories you are eating when you are maintaining a steady weight. Once you have that figure, you can deduct a few hundred calories. So if you currently eat 2000 cal to maintain your weight, drop it down to 1600 or so and that will be your intake. This is just my opinion and what I did to work out what I need to eat to lose weight.

Did you go on to the NHS live well weight loss page? Part the way down the page it says BMI calculator, click on that link and fill in the details then it will give you your BMI and just underneath their pretty coloured representation it says your calorie range, I think it is in a red box.

Hope that helps

you need a website that will calculate your Base Metabolic Rate (BMR). This will tell you how many calories you expend laid in bed. Any activity you do will add to this, even walking.

You should then subtract 500 calories a day from this if you want to lose 1 pound a week, subtract 1000 calories to lose 2 pounds a week.

Obviously the calculations are very approximate, and a lot depends on how accurate you track activity and calculate your calorie input. But they are a starting point at least.

If you just use the free MyFitnessPal app or website you log in all your details and how quickly you want to lose weight and it tells you how many calories you should be having. Then you enter each thing you eat or drink and it keeps a running total for you.

Easy peasy!
