Hi everyone,

Last Monday I weighed 13 stone 5.8 pounds, and today I weigh 13 stone 6.6 pounds, so I've gained 0.8 pound this week. I am really surprised to have gained weight, because I thought I'd had a sensible week - I exercised on 6 out of 7 days, and I counted my calories and managed to keep within a sensible range. I really expected to lose something, and am amazed to find I've gained.

I did have quite a few salty foods on Saturday though, so I'm wondering if I'm carrying excess water, and that maybe once that has come out of my system, I'll lose some weight. I hope so!!! :-)

Please join me and let me know how your week has gone. I hope it's been a good week.

We're into March now, and hopefully the weather will start to improve. I hope that if I keep on track this week that maybe I'll lose 2 pounds. That's my goal for this week - to lose 2 pounds and to keep up my exercise and healthy eating plan.

Wishing you all a great week ahead.

Lowcal :-)

His local, that's unfortunate about your weight gain. I'm sure it will come off next week. I'm in the opposite boat I've had a terrible eating week and was surprised I'd only put on 0.2 pounds. My only upside was that I still did a good bit of exercise.

Planning for a much healthier week this week.

Good luck everyone

ZestHealthy BMI in reply to SineadC92

Hi Sinead92,

Good that you only gained 0.2 pound despite thinking you had a terrible eating week - I think the fact you kept up a good bit of exercise must have helped. You'll soon lose that and more by next week, all being well.

Yes, hopefully my excess will come off next week - I definitely hope for that. :-)

You've got an excellent goal to have a healthier week this week, so good luck with that, and have a great week!

Just sometimes a plan does not got to plan....I know you will stick at it and be dropping those pounds.

As for me despite two huge birthday celebrations I have managed by some minor miricle to skim off half a pound. Hooray Hooray- I am feeling pretty disciplined this week - so hoping for a bit more next week.

As you say March is here - bit warmer and lighter. I am appreciating the driving to and from work in the light - it really does make such a difference. So feeling positive.

Have a good week everyone:-)

Hi Suzybenj,

Great to hear you're feeling positive, and even better to hear you've lost half a pound this week - that's great! Hope you enjoyed those Birthday celebrations - so great that you managed to lose weight after attending those!

Yes, it's great that the evenings and mornings are brighter, and from next weekend the clock's will change, so it'll be even better!

Wishing you another great week ahead.

Hey, it happens like that some weeks with me too, I even feel thinner but scale reading has gone up. Looks like you have a good idea of the reason though so that is a positive. Good luck with that 2lb goal. :)

Hi Size12goal,

Yes, I agree, it doesn't always go to plan, or as we anticipate it might. Thanks for your kind words, and encouragement. Much appreciated. :-)

Hope you are having a good week yourself and wishing you continued success with your goals.

Hi Lowcal, I have lost 200g/0.7 pounds. As usual I've had a very social weekend (eating out, concerts, a few drinks) and although I managed to make healthy choices, I ate over my calorie limit twice this week (ovulation week; thanks hormones).

Sorry to hear about your gain. It's not much and it could be totally due to water retention. The important thing is that you stayed on track and were disciplined. Have a good week!

Hi HRHGaby,

Congratulations on losing 0.7 pounds (200g) - that's really great! Sounds like you had an enjoyable weekend, and well done for keeping to healthy choices. I agree that hormones do make a difference - at least you've lost some weight despite ovulation week.

Thanks for your encouraging words - I really hope I am right that it is water retention. I'm going to keep on track and not let it dishearten me. :-)

Have a great week.

Hi Sidcup1,

It's great that you've had a sensible week, so well done for that! I know you've gained a pound, and it's down to the weekend hearty dinners and wine, but hopefully you'll soon get that off again once you are back to your previous pattern. Let's hope we both lose 2 pounds for next Monday and then we can definitely feel good about that! :-)

Have a great week ahead.

Good morning Lowcal, sorry to see you are struggling, I think you are right about retaining fluid, the body does funny things at time, hope you have a good week. I have lost 2lbs this week making a total of 17lbs. People are starting to notice now which makes me feel great. I think I am losing weight as I have recently moved and I have been very active, painting, wallpapering, sorting and lugging heavy things about. Spent a lot of time climbing up and down stepladders which I think has helped a lot. Good luck.

Hi Carolann48,

Congratulations on losing 2 pounds this week - you have consistently lost weight over the past few weeks, and it's great to hear you've lost 17 pounds in total. Really well done!!! :-)

It's brilliant that people are starting to notice.

Especially well done for continuing to lose whilst having moved house - all that activity and hard-work has paid off.

Wishing you another great week ahead, and enjoy your new place.

Hi, this is my first weigh in, last week I weighed 12st 8lb ... Today I weigh 12st 1lb, so in my first week I lost 7lb!!! Having never stuck to a 'proper' plan I am quite amazed. It has obviously helped that having been injured for 8 weeks and unable to exercise I am finally able to walk properly again so am building on my fitness .... Happy dancing around today with a big grin will obviously burn a few calories too!!

That said, I aim to lose 2lb this week, but realize it will be much more of a battle!

Hi there lowcal. I've also managed to gain weight this week, putting another pound on when I am meant to be maintaining! Some of that may be due to poor choices yesterday as we were out and so had sandwiches, crisps and cake for lunch, then an indian takeaway for tea, including a naan bread. I still feel full and bloated this morning and was woken in the night with indigestion, so all my own fault! I want to lose the two pounds I has put back on since getting to target and so need to be more careful. I think I am getting a bit too relaxed, thinking I have loads of calories to eat, especially on the days I am running, and so it is ok to have a packet of crisps or bar of chocolate. I need to get back into the habit of healthy snacks and maybe just increase my calories by having the normal range of foods, rather than the low calorie range! I need to give myself a stern talking to and maybe pin my before and after picture up somewhere to remind myself what I have done!

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to catch

Hi Catch,

I am sure your pound will come off again really soon, as you said you're going to give yourself a stern talking to - having your before and after picture pinned up will also be very much an incentive to stick to your resolve. You have done so well, and come a long way, and readjusting to maintenance is challenging, but you can do it!

Wishing you a good week ahead.

Morning all :) My battery has died this morning so I can't weigh in yet! May not be a bad thing as I'm fairly certain I'm pre menstrual this week which always shows on the scale!

Lowcal I'm sure you will knock that small gain off this week, you know how it happened which always helps.

It is currently snowing from a clear blue sky here and my darling (diva) dog is refusing to get off the sofa and go for a walk! I'll have to hope it stops soon so I can get out for an hour.

I'll try and remember to check back in once I've got a battery :)

Hope everyone has a good week.

Hi Kate,

Sorry to hear your battery died this morning - that's not nice of it to do that! I'm glad you mentioned the word 'pre-menstrual' because you're reminded me that I am actually coming up to my period, so likely that my weight gain might be also due to that, and not just to water retention. That gives me a bit more hope that I might achieve my goal this week.

I hope you are able to persuade your dog to come for a walk with you, and that the snow stops soon!

Good luck in getting your battery, and look forward to hearing from you later.

Morning Lowcal and everyone! :)

Bit of a mix this morning with the weigh ins. Sorry to hear you have gained Lowcal, but as others have mentioned, it is only small and hopefully it is some water weight as you seem yo have had a good week! Fingers crossed for you! :)

I have had another good week that has put a big grin on my face this morning. I felt so rubbish with myself after moving house and putting nearly a stone back on, I'd forgotten how good it feels to get back to losing! The fact that I've lost weight two weeks in a row feels so nice for a change! :D

I have lost 1lb this week, bringing me down to 12st 10lbs. 2lbs would have been nice again after last week but a loss is still a loss and I'm feeling good!

Lent is still going good too, and I have all the support from my family! Only managed two days exercise last week, but I'm going to step it up this week. I want to see another loss on the scales!

Hope everyone has a good week this week. Hopefully see a bunch on losers on Monday! Good luck!

Congratulations to you for losing another pound this week - that's really great! You're back on track again and going in the right direction. Really good! :-)

Good to hear that your family are supporting you with your resolutions for Lent. Good luck with increasing your exercise this week - I'm sure that'll help you see another loss on the scales.

I'd love to be in the "Losing Bunch" next Monday, so let's hope we're all in that category by then. :-)

Thanks for your supportive words, as always. Much appreciated! :-)

Hi, sorry your dissapointed this week, but hopefully it will show next week and you will achieve your goal of 2lbs. It's funny sometimes you are good and it doesn't show on the scales but shows following week.

I am really pleased this week that I have lost 1lb as had friends round for dinner in week and went out to Sunday lunch yesterday for a 65th birthday and had cake and champagne. Will have to be really good this week as going out for a meal again on Thursday.

My target when I started was 1.5 lbs per week and I am bang on target this week so hopefully won't get behind, I want to loose another 12lbs over next 8 weeks before I go on holiday.

Good luck to everyone for next week.

Congratulations to you for losing 1 pound this week, that's really great. It's good that you were able to enjoy those celebrations as well, and cake and Champagne sounds delicious!

It's great that you've achieved your target, and here's to continued progress. Wishing you another great week, and hope you enjoy your meal out on Thursday.

Hi Lowcal,

I think it must be the time of year that's causing all this weight gain - I'm up as well! Back to 11st 1lb but after a chat with hubby this morning we have decided to take matters in hand and get the meal plans sorted this week so no excuses next Monday 😰.

Stick with it, it's the only way and we will get there in the end 😄😄.

See you all next week. 😄😄

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to Rosiegreenpea

Hi Rosiegreenpea,

So sorry to hear you've also had a gain this week - but you've given some excellent advice, when you say "Stick with it, it's the only way we will get there in the end" - and I agree completely - even when there's a gain on the scales, it's important to reassess things and look to achieve the loss the next week - you and your husband have 'regrouped' and you're decision to get your meals planned and sorted will definitely help.

So look forward to being in the "Loser's Club" next week! Hopefully I'll be joining you there as well. :-)

I have to say that everyone's encouraging posts in this thread really helps me to try to stay on track and keep going. Persistence will win through in the end. :-)

Have a great week ahead.

Lowcal :-)

Bit of a mixed one. Weighed myself at 12st1 this morning and thought I'd stayed the same since last week. Been out for a run and for a doc appointment and just checked what weight I entered on last week's thread and it was 12st2, so actually I've lost 1lb. So all in, good to have lost, but have spent past 3 hours cross with myself thinking I hadn't lost. Goes to show it's good to keep a record...

Hope your small gain is just down to natural fluctuation within an overall period of losing weight. Perhaps the hard work from this week will show in next week's weigh-in. Whatever you're doing, keep at it, it sounds like you're on the right track. Try countering salty foods with extra glasses of water so your body can get rid of the salt more easily perhaps. Thanks for managing this thread, I'm finding it a really helpful way to keep track. Lots of luck :)

Hi Ruth_Canal_Runner,

I'm so glad you discovered that you'd actually lost 1 pound this week instead of gained - that must have been a relief! Congratulations on the loss. Really great. :-)

Thanks for the advice regarding drinking more water to help get rid of the salt. Saturday night tends to be when I allow myself a pizza, and it really does seem very salty. I will try your suggestion.

Great to hear you've had a run already, and hope you have a great day and a positive week ahead.

Lowcal :-)

in reply to Zest

I remember doing a weight-loss programme where they did in fact explain something about things showing a week later, something to do with how your body adapts to getting fewer calories. So it may very well be that your good week last week will lead to a loss next week, as long as you keep to the same calories.

This past week I've been having more cheese on my pasta again, been lapsing into old habits a bit, not padding my meals out with salad as I was in previous weeks. I think I'm much better at disciplining myself through exercise than through diet. Running at the beginning of the day really helps me to feel motivated.

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to

I am encouraged by you saying that. I know I had eaten more during recent weeks as I had a chest infection, and therefore for me last week was a definite change in terms of getting back to a serious 'plan' - and I have to admit I was disappointed to have gained weight rather than lost any, after what I perceived to be a 'good week'. It can be tempting to 'give up' when that happens, but I know from past experience that I just need to stick at things and persevere, and that hopefully a loss will show up on the scale next week.

I put cheese on pasta too - it makes it really tasty! I also put some on roasted vegetables too - but I do ensure I just put a sprinkling. I think I should be more disciplined and 'weigh it'.

I'd like to start some running when the weather improves. But for now, I'm doing regular walks. It's great that you're enjoying your runs and finding them motivating. It's a great form of exercise. :-)

Hi Lowcal

I'm sure that small gain will be down to water - and probably tomorrow morning it will be gone. Good to hear you are back to exercising again - 6 out of 7 days is brilliant.

I'm + 2lbs since I last posted - still not walking much due to pain. Starting to follow Patrick Holford's GL eating plan this week having done a lot of research. Time to stop reading and time for action!

Have a good week.

Zest profile image

Hi Bispers,

Thanks very much for your encouraging words.

It must be hard for you at the moment with your restricted mobility - I really hope that the pain gets more manageable soon.

Good luck with the Patrick Holford Eating plan - it sounds like you've done your research, so now you can take action. Your 2 pounds gained should soon go away once you're on a committed plan. Good luck with it, and here's to a good week ahead, and hopefully losses for us both. :-)

runnerjan profile image

Hi Lowcal,

sorry to hear you've had an unexpected gain - they're the worst kind aren't they?? Hopefully it will be double bonus week for you next week and you will lost the 2 pounds you are aiming for.

I apologise for my absence - it's been 5 weeks (eek!) since I last weighed in - the first week was due to dead batteries on scales so duly went and purchased new ones ready for the following week. Although I can't remember clearly I think the 2nd week had been a bad week so mentally could not face the black and weight digital truth of a weight gain. Week 3, which was half-term break so I was not working, I caught the awful sickness bug that had been doing the rounds and didn't weigh in and then week 4 I avoided due to feeling fat and fed up etc. Now it's very easy to practice weighing-scale-avoidance and I seem to have become a bit of an expert. So today I have given myself a good talking to and just stepped on. I am pleasantly surprised to be 1lb less than I was 5 weeks back when I last weighed in and am currently 11 stone 10 pounds. I think I need to just draw a line under 'fed up February' and start again.

Reading through the posts lots of people seem to be feeling really positive especially with the lighter mornings and evenings. I am hoping all this positivity will inspire me to have a good week and with a great deal of luck I may try to match your goal of a 2 pound loss next week.

Best wishes to all, hope you have a great week

Hi I found myself in your post. :-( I put on -0.5-1kg. Currently weighting 100.3kg (converted to 15st 10.4) I ve been extreamly good this week. plus took the Couch to 5K on board so im a bit disappointed with the scale. Friend of mine told me that it matters at what stage of period (Lady days) you are. (Sorry if i put off people by talking about that but I think those hormones do affect the weight loss) Apparently you tend to put on weight during the days - no idea how exactly it works but she said so (She is weight consultant at Cambridge Weight Plan).

Hi MoNi88,

I'm really glad you joined us today for this Monday weigh-in. You're very welcome. :-)

Sorry to hear you put on a little amount of weight this week - I did as well, and it's always disappointing especially when you've had a good week in terms of keeping up with your plan and exercise etc. A couple of us have already mentioned that we think we are pre-menstrual this week, and that may be why we've gained a bit of weight, and although I've not looked into the studies regarding weight fluctuations and hormones, I have heard that there are links.

It's good that you have the support of your friend, that's really helpful to have someone who can support us. Really helpful.

Just keep going and have another good week, MoNi88, and hopefully you'll see a loss on the scales next week. That's what I'm hoping for too, and let's hope we both see a good result for next week's weigh-in. Hope you'll join us again and hope to see you then.

Hi Lowcal, I have just joined the forum and love your Monday weigh in posts. I have a lot of weight to lose and I'm hoping that the weigh in posts are going to keep me on track. I have had crazy weeks before where the scales don't reflect how I thought I had done but I think sometimes your body has a blip every now and again. I think it's more of a problem when it happens regularly and then I have found that the food diary is invaluable. Must admit that I have found some foods that I had forgotten to write down and were tipping me over my calorie limit. Anyway I hope you are having a better week and look forward to hearing how much you lose next Monday.

Hi Bebe1,

A very warm welcome to you, and thanks for joining us. Glad you like the Monday weigh-in posts, and hope you enjoy being part of them as well. Those 'body blips' are annoying, aren't they? I definitely use the food diary and Myfitnesspal to keep account of all my intake and exercise - like you say, it's invaluable. I often have to adapt it at the end of the day to account for some of those foods that seemed to have slipped under the radar. It's hard to think of everything.

Thanks very much for your positive words and encouragement, and I will look forward to catching up with you next week so we can share our experiences of how the week has gone. Good luck and hope you have a successful week!

Hi all, just remembered to check back in! Well, after my ridiculous loss whilst suffering from a chest and ear infection I have now gone up to 16st9&1/4 so effectively have lost 1lb in 3 weeks. I'm not too fussed as didn't feel remotely healthy or energised in the aftermath of the illness but now I feel "normal" again.

I have something to aim for as we have booked to go to Royal Ascot in June and I am very excited and would like to feel the part in a nice dress (rather than a tent like last year!!!)

Hope you all have a healthy happy week :)

HI Local & everyone!

I've been off this for a while as I was seriously ill (gall stones; obstructive jaundice & then on the buy 2, get one free principal, pancreatitis)- the silver lining is that I lost a whopping 2 stone - now I have the job of keeping off! My previous dieting limit of 1400 cals is now nearly my maintenance target, so I've gone onto My fitness pal to log things really carefully. Been doing this a week and lost 2 lbs., putting me at 11st 6. I really want to be under 11 stone for my next op, which is Monday 13th April. Fortunately, I can't eat fatty foods or drink alcohol after the pancreatitis, so I do have an outside chance.

Local, sorry about your smaller loss, but I bet you put on muscle if you were exercising - next week will be better!

Hi Bluehills,

Great to see you again - so sorry to hear that you've been so ill - really awful - sounds really painful conditions - very serious too. Glad you're better after that. Congratulations on losing 2 stones - although awful way to have lost it really. But like you say, it's a silver lining. Myfitnesspal should help you to keep on track of everything. I really like it.

Congratulations on losing 2 pounds this week. You're well on your way towards being under 11 stone in time for your operation in April.

Thanks for your encouraging words - I am really hopeful that I'll lose some weight this week - so here's hoping!!! :-)

Have a great week.

Hi Kate,

Glad you checked back in - great to see you! Sorry to hear you've gone up a bit since your chest and ear infection, but glad to hear you've lost 1 pound over 3 weeks - it's still a loss! Well done for that. :-)

It's great to feel normal again after being ill, isn't it? I'm really thankful that my chest infection has finally gone, and I can enjoy exercise again. It's really great! :-)

Exciting to hear you're going to Royal Ascot in June - great incentive in terms of choosing a nice dress to wear.

Have a great week.

Hi Lowcal I have missed a few week as my iPad went back for repairs but I did keep to the diet! Unfortunately I have only lost 1lb so now weigh 17st 2lbs but 1 off is better than 1 on and it is coming down all be it very slowly

Does salt make a big difference as I am a real salt fiend I know it's not good but.....

Hi Maxiemum,

Glad your iPad is working again, and well done for keeping to the healthy eating plan in the meantime. That's great. Congratulations on losing 1 pound - I know you said you'd 'only' lost 1 pound, but it really is worth celebrating, as it's all good. Slow and steady is a healthy way to lose it. I think salt does contribute to water retention, but somebody helpfully pointed out that you can drink more water to help flush it out.

I try not to consume too much salt in terms of health, as I don't think it's particularly good to have too much. There are daily recommendations for salt intake, and Myfitnesspal does show the Sodium values in foods.

Hope you have another great week ahead.

Weight 11st 6lb exactly the same as when I started 2nd January. Not been focused but now have booked a holiday. Started logging intake with my fitnesspal, time consuming but has helped in past. Hope we all have a good week x

Hi Micky10,

At least you've not gained any weight overall during these very cold and Wintry months. I think that's an achievement in itself. Glad to hear you've booked a holiday and have something to look forward to and work towards. Myfitnesspal should definitely help with your food and drink logging.

Wishing you a good week ahead.

Lowcal :-)

Hi sorry you've not lost this week. Keep going! Weight does stick sometimes and then starts to go down again.

I have lost 1lb this week. Just 6lb to go to reach my next target.

Have a good week.

Hi CleoBud,

Good to hear you're feeling that you're doing well so far, and you're half-way through your first week. That's great! I agree with you that weekends are definitely a challenge. The way I try to cope with weekends is to allow myself a couple of extra treats - but I try to stick at that and not have any more. That way I feel like I'm enjoying the weekend along with everyone else - and not feeling deprived.

I try to keep busy and do a longer walk on both Saturday and Sunday as well.

It is useful to pre-plan what you're going to eat over the weekend, and try to stick to that plan.

Good luck!

You could put your question to the whole forum as a 'question' and then you'd get lots of tips from others about how they cope with weekends. I think it's a really good question.

Good luck, and hope to see you at the Monday weigh-in.

Lowcal :-)
