Hi

I have been healthy eating since 1st Jan and I don't seem to be losing weight. I have lost just 4lbs since then and that was all in one week. I have stayed at 11st since then and am getting down about it. I am menopausal, well I assume I am as I haven't had a period for about 4 years now! I don't have any other symptoms apart from weight gain. I have been walking more and have cut out a lot of my bad snacking habit that I used to have. I feel bloated a lot when I eat although I don't believe I have any allergies to certain foods. My weight does seem to be all on my tummy/love handles - in fact I look about 7 months pregnant in the evenings! I wondered if anyone else is having a problem losing weight who are at the same sort of age as me. Any advice would be welcome. Thank you.

I am 60 this year and am finding it difficult - have lost about half a stone so far but don't exercise normally so need to think about that. In terms of menopause you get so many symptoms so difficult to differentiate how much this impacts on anything!

Hi Coolcat

I'm a few years older than you. I have found that cutting down on processed foods and carbs has helped me lose weight.

Some people can find that wheat products, like bread, will bloat them, because wheat can be difficult to digest. You could test this by giving up bread and cereal for a couple of weeks, and see if there is any improvement.

Giving up bad snacks is important, along with giving up foods with added sugar. If you can cut down on starchy foods generally this should help with weight loss, too. I have kept full fat foods in my eating plan, and tend to start the day with eggs for breakfast.

I have changed what I eat, rather than cutting down. Good luck with finding what works for you.

There is only one explanation for why we are not losing weight: we are eating too much to lose.

You may be eating too little to gain, or eating just enough to maintain, but definitely need to eat less (me too).

That is the stark reality ... The body tells us the truth! Some people sometimes say that they don't eat a lot and still don't lose, but for their particular body it is a lot. I find I have to cut down a lot in order to lose.

A little food goes a longer way than we may think.

I have been sticking to 1200 calories and logging everything I eat on My Fitness Pal but maybe I need to reduce my intake even further. Thank you for the advice.

It's not only about what you eat, it's about what you burn off. To lose 2lb a week you need around a 1000 calorie a day deficit between what you burn and what you eat, sedentary living only burns off around 1100-1500 calories a day, so if you're consuming around that amount you're on course to maintain, unless you add some exercise to up your output.

Food !!!! for thought and made me think.

Hi there, I'm 67 so probably even older than you. I refuse to believe that my weight is age related, and indeed when I was menopausal I manage to lose weight successfully. I kept it off for some 6 or 7 years. I think I started to gain again when my husband died. Nibling all the time and visiting tea rooms with friends 😁 I'm now really going for it, and although I've done weight loss before, it never fails to amaze me, as I cut down my portions, just how much I was eating and thinking it was "normal". And, like many others, I only eat whole foods, no processed stuff. I came on here because I too was having a problem losing, but the tips I've had are really great and I'm convinced that although I thought I was dieting, I was still eating too much. Hope this helps.

I must admit I have been comfort eating since my Dad died a few years ago and now I am finding it so hard to lose. Portion size is definitely a good point. I am a vegetarian so eat lots of fresh food but agree that processed foods are a problem. And why is there so much sugar hidden in everything?! Drives me mad! I am going to get a food processor today so going to make my own food more. Thank you so much for the advice. :)

By the way, although I couldn't get the hang of it at first, I'm now using MyFitnessPal. It tracks all your food so that you know exactly how much you are eating. (Or over eating in my case!) At first I thought it was a pain having to make all the entries, but now I love it. Highly recommended 😀

I totally understand what you are experiencing,.....it's soul destroying to put it mildly when all your efforts amount to hardly any loss, I feel certain that menopause 'unfairness' has a lot to answer for, so I saw something on line entitled, how to lose a stone in one week guaranteed, it may not be recommended, but I'm nearing the point where I'm considering giving this crash style diet a go, as things are just not working,......It will be incredibly tough....but if it works..even just a bit....i'll be gratefl...good luck!!

Hiya I too started on 1st of Jan... up to my last weigh in last thursday I have lost 11 lbs... I suffered with bloating... I cut out bread, buscuits all white pasta's ... 99% of cheese milk products and only use virgin olive oil... lots of fresh fish chicken and skinless pork... and very rarely red meat... I have weighed my food and written down ever mouth full... then in time you will be able to judge your correct food intake... and place small goals for yourself... eg my first goal is 18lbs in 12 weeks... and above all else don't loose hope... there are lots of people here to give extra encouragement...xx

Hi Coolcat, well done, at least you have started. I am 70 this year and have only recently started trying to lose weight through the 12 week challenge. And it has been a challenge, the first couple of weeks I was losing about 1kg+ and a lot of cms (or inches) of bloating. What I found was when I stopped eating all flour and processed foods, like pasta, bread, biscuits and sugar, the bloating stopped, so instead of seven months pregnant at night I looked about three months pregnant. I was doing OK for about four weeks, then became just not motivated to do any exercise, so exercise seems to be the ting to help with the weight lose. Don't worry about the menopause stuff, I don't think it will be that, it is most likely just the lack of exercise and the calories being controlled. I am in week seven this week and going to try and get back on track, calorie counting, exercise and some stretching exercises to see if that will help. I am sure it will. Take heart and have fun, were only old once. Good luck.

Coolcat, I think you have some really valuable comments to consider on here, as replies. I got very fed up and was eating a lot of biscuits, knowing full well that it was not the way forward !!!! I think you should have a go, as others have said, at really trying not to eat unnecessary carbs, such as biscuits, cakes, chips, and try to fill up with lots of vegetables......combined with some meat or form of protein.

I feel sure that this will help you. Set yourself small goals, such as 2 lb a week, and be happy with that if you succeed in doing that. Then set another small goal to aim at.

Please let us know how you get on.
