Doctor no use at all.

Hi Everyone

Over the course of my 38yr life ive probably managed to lose around 15 stone in weight but unfortunately have put it all back on everytime I have lost it. Something has normally taken place, a sports injury, work problem and I just comfort eat and then it spirals out of control over a few months and then I'm back with the weight gain.

I eat very healthy during work but also have a very stressful busy job and somedays im so shattered when I finish, gym goes out the window and I eat rubbish. I have the problem where I know im eating rubbish but can't stop and keep going and going.

I recently went to the doctor for help and to see if they could suggest anything to help me or some sort of service where I could talk to someone and the alarming response was "just stop eating so much, if your not running 3 or so miles everyday then you shouldn't be eating much" as you can imagine, I wasn't best pleased with the lack of understanding.

Well, I'm waffling so hopefully we can all have a good journey together and get to where we need to be x x good luck to you all x x

I've read your post and I wonder if you've heard of the 5:2 Diet - sometimes known as the Fast Diet? It really worked for me and it was free to do.

I lost the three stone I needed to on the 5:2 Diet in six months after watching Michael Mosley's excellent Horizon programme in 2012, "Eat, Fast and Live Longer" tinyurl.com/qzgo7tq or tinyurl.com/a8ppjl7 and went from a size 16 to a size 10 by eating 500 calories two non-consecutive days a week. I've been maintaining my weight loss since April 2013 by just fasting one day a week - in the past I piled the weight back on as soon as I finished 'dieting'. I'd very much recommend you read Kate Harrison's book, "The 5:2 Diet" (tinyurl.com/qe6mz4u) - it really does work and it will save you a fortune (towards your smaller clothes!).

I'd also very much recommend a free app for your phone called MyFitnessPal. Counting calories is very important so you can see how much you're eating and therefore eat mindfully rather than mindlessly. There are excellent videos in the Help section on the app that show you how it works - there's even a barcode reader to scan in branded foods.

It's important you don't eat more than your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) on non-fasting days. You can work that out here thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-.... If yours works out at more than 2000 then aim at 2000 on non-fasting days.

Here I am in the Daily Mail on 7th January tinyurl.com/m7rqecq. The other two ladies’ stories are inspiring!

Here Michael Mosley answers many questions on it dailymail.co.uk/health/arti...

How very unhelpful of your doctor! Unfortunately, nutrition and knowledge about food does not get much coverage in medical training.

Comfort eating and over eating rubbish can be a problem for many, but you have realised that you need to do something about it, so either you change it all in one go or take some baby steps towards it. But don't beat yourself up over it.

Do you need to plan more, so that you always have something healthy available? Can you batch cook and freeze some of it? Can you make sure that the 'rubbish' is out of the house?

One of the things that spurred me on to make changes was the realisation that 'rubbish' food is deliberately made to be addictive, with just the right combination of salt, sugar and fat to get us hooked.

The 12 week plan works well for a lot of people, but there are alternatives if it doesn't. The 5:2 is one option. I have found that cutting right down on sugar and starchy foods, but keeping full fat foods, along with lots of veg and protein, has worked for me.

Have a look at low-carb diets if you think it might be helpful.
