Congratulations on losing weight! You've worked hard and have done well so don't worry about a little set back. To stop comfort eating is hard but you did it before so can do it again. My weight loss has been set back several times with comfort eating but remain positive and you will soon get your mojo back. I find talking to people about worries and anxieties helps and you soon train your mind to realise you get more help and support that way than through junk food.

Hi teeks01,

Well the good thing about this is that you know just where the plan is failing, so you can focus on two aspects to get you eating back under control.

1) taking responsibility for what and how much you eat whilst Mum's away. Hey, it's your body and it's you putting the food into it and it's you that has to carry around the extra weight and risk the additional health risks. Really, what has Mum got to do with it?

2) comfort eating (or other similar problems, boredom eating, etc). Well, there are a range of strategies for dealing with unhelpful / unhealthy eating habits. And they are really about changing your behaviours. So, they include:

Remove the need - find other forms of comfort, other than munching on low-nutrition comfort food.

Remove the resource - if there isn't any comfort food in the house, then you won't be able to munch it

Reduce the amount - limit yourself to a small portion of your comfort food, e.g. if your problem is chocolate, allow yourself a small bar (say 40g) and make it last a week.

Notice the prompt and avoid it - what situation are you in when you find yourself starting to comfort eat? Are you on the settee watching TV? If so, then change you schedule around to avoid the situation.

Distract yourself - Fill you time up with other activities so that you don't get into the situations that prompt you to start comfort eating.

Substitute - instead of eating junk at those times, eat a moderate-sized healthy snack - e.g. swop the cream doughnut for an apple or a small salad.

Interrupt - break into the cycle of the habit slowing the process down. E.g. agree with yourself that you will eat something, because you feel like it, but first you're going to walk around the block / get off the settee and lay the table and eat it there - just something that makes you 'notice' what you are eating more, before it's gone inside the mouth!

Postpone - put off eating the comfort food until ... (the end of the next programme / it's whatever o'clock / etc.) There's a good chance you won't feel so much like it half an hour or so later.
