I am new to this page, I need to lose a few stones but I struggle, I have a stressful job and I'm not blaming the job completely as I know it's my doing but when I'm stressed out I reach for sweet things. I have a bad sweet tooth and I only eat junk at work which is the problem

It makes me feel good for a few minutes so it's not good really:/

Does anyone have any advice and things I can eat instead that will stop a sugar craving?

Thank you

Lisa :)

Hi. I had a mega sweet tooth, especially biscuits with my brew :) I'm on week 8 of eating healthy and lost just over 2 stone. I've tried every diet for the past 20 years. The thing that has helped me is planing all my meals. Making my lunch for work, having my dinner planned out from when I get home and not eating after 7 at night x

I've not had chocolate since posting this. It all depends where I work at work. I work in a mental health nursing.home I start at 7am. Finish at 8pm. Home at 9pm. So I don't eat then but it's hard to eat dinner in the evening as my afternoon break is 15:30pm so bit early for dinner. And I'm not hungry At that time due to having lunch at 13:30.

I am getting there :) thank you for your reply x

Hi, i too am an emotional eater so I share your pain :). The keys to changing this behavior were: 1) realizing that it is a habit - a learned response to dealing with stress, 2) making a pact with myself to not go to the snack machine, bring sweets to work, or take any from others, 3) find a different way to cope with the stress - take a 10 min break, go for a walk, vent to a co-worker, mediate/pray, give myself a pep talk, 4) give myself permission to have a small sweet treat 100-150/day but only once and at a pre-planned time (after dinner) so I wasn't totally deprived but didn't allow myself to sabotage my goals.

Hi thank you for your reply. We don't have snack machines etc. At work. But we do.have a biscuit tin... Hence the problem lol. I've been doing ok since posting this question. Thing is when I'm at work I can't go out for. Walk etc. I'm there from 7am-8pm and we can't Leave the building.

Also. Venting to others isn't allowed as I work in a nursing home.

I am getting there. Thank u x

A lot has been written recently about sugar being an addiction. Sugar is in almost everything, all processed foods of whatever kind, so it's difficult to avoid. However, from the point of view of being a 'sugar craving' it is an addiction that can be beaten. It takes time but it can be done.

You've put your finger on it when you wrote 'it makes me feel good for a few minutes'. Just a few minutes. And then what? The stress etc, whatever is most stressful in your job, will still be there after that few minutes and what you ate will not have solved any of the problems you have at work e.g. too much work/too little time, unrealistic expectations, other people's burdens placed on you. Eating sugar will not solve any of those problems!

I thought I'd given you some! If your only access to sugary snacks is a biscuit tin then don't eat the biscuits! You've said you know you'll feel good for a few minutes, but what then? Just don't eat them!

I know that, but was asking for substitutes . Healthy snacks that are better. Not just fruit. Want something healthy, but something that I won't get bored with.

I think what CoachTam writes is very useful. She has found by experience, something which works for her. Not all of us feel the need to eat snacks. There may be a reason why you do. Usually it's something learned, way back in time.
