OK Chubby Mum, you've come to the right place. We are all here for the same reason - too much food, lack of get-up-and-go, not enough healthy living. Are you going to try the nhs 12 week plan (it does work!) ? Basically it's all aout making small but achievable life-style changes rather than a set "diet". Take some time to sit down and plan what you want to do - ask for advice if you're not sure - and think about smaller portions, regular meals, keeping track of what you eat. Don't let it be a burden. Enjoy the changes and feel the glow as your energy returns. You CAN do it :-)

Thank you autumn witch i signed up to the nhs about 40 mins ago. I've always been plus size.. I was a spoilt child never told no and to make matters worse I was attacked last year and I eat without realising :(... Thank you for a positive response I will read it when I feel un motivated. As I cant talk to my family or friends as im embarresed

Stop thinking about the word "diet" it will rule your life and make you binge more! Consentrate on eating 3 times a day making healthier choices and occupy yourself between times. Freeze some grapes to nibble on while watching TV or freeze a banana in it's skin it's like a creamy ice lolly

Hear hear to the above. We are all here for the same reason and have a wonderful support system for when we feel we just can't do it and of course to share our successes. Just take small steps at a time. I was 18st 4lbs when I started, so I aimed to drop down to the 17's and after that to 17st 11lbs (half a stone) and then 17st 4lbs (a stone). That way the goal is more achievable and within reach. Take on some form of exercise to burn off those calories and believe me in no time you will be reaping the results physically and mentally! You also have your daughter to think about and how you can also mould her into a healthy lifestyle for her future. Just don't buy those temptations and then you can't just reach out for them!

So at the end of May I started out at 18st 4lbs and today I am in the 14's and have lost 3 and a half stone counting calories on the NHS 12 week plan to healthy living. Every Monday Lowcal posts a "join me for a weekly weigh in" which gives us great incentive and support. Please join us. Go do it and many best wishes.

Excited for you as I know how wonderful it feels. It's all about YOU (and don't forget to ear mark a small reward for yourself when you reach those milestones!) I now have three beautiful blouses hanging in my wardrobe that I can now just fit into. Another couple of weeks and they will be perfect. It's my motivation to keep me going!!! X

Well done you Candy Stripe..its nice to have someone to talk to with same real life goals as I want to achieve :D thats really a awesome idea.. Ive started my day by throwing the bad stuff out and the sugar so no more tea apart from herbal like peppermint etc.. I have also photocopied a few slim pics and stuck them in places around my home.. im craving sugar right now so have had a slice of pineapple :( im determined to work hard for this x

Great idea with the photos! It is so rewarding, it really is. I have gone from a size 24 and while I am in the UK from Friday, I shall be buying size 18 jeans as the size 20's I bought many years ago and not worn ha ha, are getting rather loose. Occasionally I have a "sin" such as a square of chocolate or an ice cream but I always plot it into my calorie allowance for the day. I do my calories first thing in the morning so that I know what I have left to "play with" IF required. I use "my fitness pal" for totting up everything as it does it for you BUT I never add my exercise to it until the end of the day. If I have burned 300 calories by exercising, it will tell you that you have burned 300 extra calories BUT I never eat those 300 extra calories because that is part of my weight loss. Quite a few us avoid those extra ones!

If there is anything else we can help you with please don't hesitate to put up a post as we are ALL here for you and your success story! X

Sugar is addictive, that's why you get the craving for it. After a while you'll no longer feel that.

Hello

I agree with much that has been said already. It looks as if your problem is the binge eating. Once you can kick that, or at least get it under control, you'll be home and dry. Trying 'every diet going' is not going to work for you with that underlying problem, the binge eating. It's like trying to put a fire out while pouring petrol on it at the same time. You have some emotional problems and you use binge eating to make you feel better, with the result that you gain weight. There are other things in life which bring pleasure, calmness, enjoyment, which don't result in weight gain. You might be better going to a group and being able to talk through your problems face to face.

Best wishes

Hi margrete how lovely :) you deffo hit the nail on the head :( ive used food as a comfort blanket for soooo long its hard to turn back.. I deffo have alot of emotional turbulance.. I dont do well in group sessions as I have no confidence and suffer with anxiety im not looking for sympathy I just want to be as truthful as possible on hear because my friends and family are all on the small side x

Hello Shell

Probably not in group sessions, but somewhere that you can talk to an understanding and knowledgeable person face-to-face. Could your GP suggest someone helpful? There has to be a reason WHY you use food as a 'comfort blanket' and have done so for a very long time, so long that you can't even recall how it all started, or why. In many instances it goes back to early childhood. If you've ever heard of the Jewish mother stereotype, they're like that. Food was used both as a reward and a comfort from way way back.

My stepdaughter, who lost a huge amount of weight, found new friends by joining a group. She also - when she reached rock-bottom due to a failed third marriage plus redundancy - found that it helped sitting down with pencil and paper and writing it all down. She's managed to maintain the weight loss, is happy in a new relationship and has a new job.

I sometimes wonder how I don't turn to 'comfort eating'. It just wouldn't help. I can walk past cakes etc without giving them a second glance. I've done just that, at charity coffee mornings. I could eat chocolates until they came out of my ears, they wouldn't make me feel any better or solve any problems at all. It really is 'in the mind' and not in the belly.

Don't bother about any new 'diets'. Ultimately all diets are about one thing - eating less! The one thing I would say is - sugar is the real baddie. Refined sugar is in so many, many food items and we don't need it. You're at the start of a journey and you're not on your own, as can be seen by the many people who post on this site.

Good luck!

Aww margrete you speak so much sense.. to be honest as a child my whole family let me be when it came to food I was never told to stop unless I was at home with my mother who detested my daily intake of whatever I liked.. both sets of grandparents and auntys n uncles would let me eat watever I wanted.I was bullied althrough primary school. when I was 11 I became independent n lost loads of weight and for the next 6years things were amazing untill my aunty passed of cancer than my grandad and nan couple of months apart. I lived with my nan and helped my grandad when I was pregnant thats when it started again by the time I had my daughter things turned sour with the dad who was violent, mentally and also emotionally I dealt with that for 6years before having the strength and courage to leave to what leaves me here today right now.. I dont have the guts to speak openly with the demons that have taunted my whole life I think you just have to fight that battle and be strong. .. im determined to make this step forward to a new lifestyle vthis been my first step.. :) thank you for the luck and for sharing your daughters progress x

Hi Chubby mum, I agree with RoundYouGo. Don't see this as a 'diet', class it as 'healthy eating and change in life style'. Four months ago I was well over weight, lacked energy and was always in the pub Fridays and Saturdays. I have now lost over three stone in four months though the NHS 12 week plan, healthy eating, portion control, not having seconds or left overs. After a couple of weeks I introduced exercise slowly from 10 minute walks to gently jog/cycling but making sure you do not over do it and injury yourself. One of the biggest helps was this website and all of the fantastic help and guidance from members. Feel free to post questions and we're all try and help you. Steve

Hi Shell,

I am in the exact same predicament as you, (even weigh the same :) ) and have just signed up for the 12 week plan this evening. I have two children and my youngest has even started calling me big bum and big tum being 4yrs old he doesn't understand this is upsetting to me but has totally shocked me in to doing something about it.

I eat to feel better but then feel like crap afterwards (vicious cycle) and weight piled on very quickly. :(

I have read many posts and yours really stood out to me and with everyone cheering you on and giving such great positive advice i feel like i to can really do this, this time :)

Keep up all your great work you have done so far.

Kick the flab to fab :) x

Hi chubby mummy,

I think the key word here IS diet - but not in the weight-losing sense - more in the medical / nutrition sense of the summation of the food and drink you consume.

I'd suggest you start by looking carefully at your current diet - look at exactly what you're eating, when and where (especially in what social circumstances), and exactly how much and how often.

The game then is to move away from your current diet / eating habits - the ones that have left you being overweight - and get yourself into new better ones where you take control of your eating and in effect 're-train' yourself to eat sensible amounts of good fully nutritious food.

Just as your body adapted to poor eating habits (and probably insufficient physical activity), when you make these changes you'll be on track for your body to adapt to them by storing less fat and reducing your body weight.
