Desperate to feel better about myself.

Hi,

I dread to think what I weigh, but I know by my size that I need to loose a hell of a lot, over 10 stone. I did the Atkins quite a long time ago and lost 7 stone, I felt great on it. I lost enough to be able to get pregnant, but have never lost my baby weight and all the extra I put on. I have seen various dieticians who have all told me I should be eating 1/3 carbs, the consultant I was under told me that I should avoid carbs as I am insulin resistant and my body just stores carbs a fat. Needless to say, I hate the way I look, have no confidence and have tried every diet over the 10 years or so, and seem to put weight on. Have kept diaries, to see what I am eating. Now to be honest, I find that I don't want to eat, I hardly eat during the day, maybe a banana and usually by late evening I am starving, but I don't want to set my daughter a bad example and I am getting really paranoid where food is concerned, the Atkins is so expensive and I don't have a lot of money. I need this to be the year I get healthy.

Hi Loobie 1605,

O.K. however difficult it may seem, I think you really should start by finding out how overweight you are. On the NHS live well lose weight pages you should find - amongst a free 12 week plan and lots of good and free advice - a BMI calculator.

O.K. BMI is only an indication - but it's not a bad place to start.

Then, once you have decided on the amount of weight (roughly) that you'd need to lose to get into the area of a normal sort of body weight, you then need to plan how to do that.

If you have a very high BMI, you may well find you can access help to lose weight via you GP practice and I'd strongly recommend you take medical advice from your GP (or other medical professional - your consultant perhaps?) if you have any underlying conditions so that you understand how undertaking a weight loss programme will impinge upon those, and vice versa.

My intial thoughts from what you have stated are that you should also seek specific advice about your inslulin resistance as hormones control many body functions relating to weight such as appetite, feeling of being full, fat burning and fat storage just to mention a few.

I'm also inclined to think that you would find it very helpful to try to get into a more sensible eating regime (as much as your lifestyle will permit) of, say, meal-snack-meal-snack-meal- snack, so that you eat three moderate sized meals during your day, with a small snack (might be literally just an apple or tomato) to 'skate the hunger off of you' between meals, meaning that you actually don't go without taking in any food for longer than about 4 hours at a time.

I do understand that it may take some effort to re-train yourself into that sort of a regime if you are used to a famine/feast way of eating. i.e. going for long periods without food and then eating lots.

Be assured though that as you get used to new habits, they become easier and you miss the old ones less.

If you have a substantial amount of weight to lose, then do take your time with it. A rate of a couple of pounds a week averaged out is just fine. Overweight people tend to become more overweight, so even if you can halt the increase, that's a significant step in the right direction.

Finally, if you set yourself a 'target' weight to get to, then do also set yourself some milestones / mini-targets to tick off as you progress along your weight loss journey.

Good luck with your weight loss efforts.

Hi Loobie

Sorry to hear you are feeling bad about yourself, but very pleased to hear that you now have a baby.

Some dieticians do not seem to understand the role of insulin in the body. The NHS recommendation to eat a third carbs does not work for a lot of people, it's just too much. If your consultant has told you to avoid carbs, this website may be of some help to you.

I have found that cutting my carbs is the best way for me to control my

weight and stay healthy. I try to buy the best quality protein I can afford and eat a wide variety of seasonal vegetables. Lots of vegetable soup! I have bought a cheap slow cooker, so that i can cook tougher cuts of meat all day not using too much electricity. I have also gone back to using lard like my granny did, and having eggs for breakfast or full fat yoghurt.

I hope you can manage to introduce regular meals in the day, as Doikosp suggested. Perhaps you can eat something when you are feeding your child? It's so nice to be able to eat together.

Good luck Loobie.
