My bmi is 34 and I need get it down to 28/29 so I can start ivf, has anyone gt any advice on best way do this?

I Have done many diets before bt nothing has really worked. I've joined the gym aswel. I'm really determined to loose this weight, if anyone has any advice it would be grateful

Start with the nhs choices 12 week plan and record all your food I.e the amount of calories you are consuming -good luck with your journey

My main advice is to try not to think about a temporary diet, but treat it as a change in lifestyle. Try to figure out what habits made you overweight and switch to habits that will keep your weight under control. For me I started planning meals better to have healthy breakfast and lunch. I took lunch to work and stopped getting high calorie take away. I started walking instead of getting the bus and got off the sofa after work to get some exercise.

Little changes add up to big results in the end. Over the last year I've lost 4stones, just by making healthier choices wherever I can.

I've found that losing weight is 90% about keeping track of diet and controlling calories. Exercise is great for increasing fitness and making you feel good, but won't automatically lead to weight loss without paying attention to diet.

You can do it!

Hi I to have to lose weight I have lost a stone and my bmi went from 38 to35 I have not done any diets but have being going to the gym not eating past seven at night and not eating chocolate I use the rowing machine and cross trainer and swim it can be done I would say one thing and that is to eat breakfast losing weight is not about diets but about making different choices good luck and I hope you succeed with your ivf

Is your need for IVF and your weight connected ie is PCOS part of the picture? In that case you might want to research the kind of approach that has worked for other women with PCOS. Plus if there are emotional reasons behind your weight they may well be multiplied by the efforts of the IVF drugs for a while so getting a good grip on that could stand you in good stead.

Definitely worth thinking of this in terms of health rather than 'losing weight' - and having an eye to adopting a lifestyle that will translate into motherhood.

Good luck - it's a very tangible goal you have there, which will help.

There is an excellent app called MyFitnessPal that is totally free and very easy to use - you can even scan in bar codes of foods which is very useful.

I watched a BBC Horizon programme in October 2012 which totally changed my life - "Eat, Fast and Live Longer." It's still available on vimeo.com/54089463. That started off the 5:2 Diet and it's the first diet that's ever permanently kept my weight off. I lost three stone (42 pounds, 20 kilos) by the spring and now just 'fast' one day a week to maintain. Fasting on 5:2 means eating 500 calories (600 for men) on two non-consecutive days a week and eating normally (but healthily) on the other days. Best to calculate your TDEE (thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-... but if that's more than 2000 then try to stay under 2000 on your non-fasting days.

I would recommend Kate Harrison's book "The 5:2 Diet" which is available anywhere and only £1.99 on Kindle.

Hi I tried the 12 week plan but I found I was often very tired, I also tried slimming world and weight watchers and I have found that weight watchers works best for me. I have lost 7lb in 4 weeks (I started at 2 stone over my ideal weight) but do the diet that best works for you. Like someone else has said try and not see it as a diet but a way of life and don't restrict or ban anything as you will only crave / want it more. Good luck. :-)

I am on week 7 of the 12 week plan and eat more food and feel more alert due to what I eat now.

I think that you need to look at what you eat as only cutting down the calories of what you were eating will make you tired all the time.

Changing to healthier snacks and looking at the saturated fat content of the food is a big help. I even still have my Friday morning treat of a maccy d's breakfast. My BMI was 33.5 and is now 31.92. My waist is now 35" not 40" and I have lost 10 lb in weight. It is a slow process but it's working. I have never eaten fish, fish products or even fish oil suppliments on principal and I rarely eat fruit.

You can do it if you prepare yourself before you start the diet. Look at what you eat first and then start to look at what you can have instead. I have changed from crisps to snack a jacks and from chocolate bars to rice crispie squares even the chocolate ones! I find that if I eat all the normal food I take to work with me first before the nice snacks, I don't always want the snacks afterall.

I agree with Smokeyjo, you need to make sure that the food you are eating is the most nutritious you can get, as the number of calories are only part of the solution.

Try to eat fresh vegetables and good quality protein, and cut down on processed food if you can. A good place to start is by cutting down on sugary drinks and food with added sugar in. Be careful of low fat foods as they are often loaded with sugar. If your problem is PCOS it is recommended that you cut down on all carbohydrates, and this will help with weight loss.

I agree with everyone that says you need to adopt a way of eating that will sustain you through pregnancy & motherhood as well as losing weight. If you do that it will helpyou putting on too much when pregnant and give you & your child a good start.

I started the 12 week plan and have carried on. So far lost over a stone and only 3lb to go to have a not overweight BMI.

My tips are calorie count, plan meals, portion control, smaller plates and don't get too hungry. Don't ban any favorites that you crave just take a small amount occasionally.

Something that has kick started my weight loss again is a commitment with others to do 3k for 30. That is as well as my gym sessions a couple of times a week plus aquafit & jog Scotland, I am walking 3k (1.8 miles) every day for 30 days. Others are doing it by running or cycling or rowing machine at the gym.
