hi I am new here just been reading about the above and thought I'd let you know I'm 75 went into boots this a m and got it, only question asked was have I used it before...suggest you try again..why the cut off age does something happen when you reach 60?

Hi polobonnie, thanks for letting me know of your experience with Boots and Canesten. Apparently Canesten treatments for thrush are supposedly only licenced by the government for sale to those people over 18 and under 65, so that, if you fall outside that age range, any chemist is entitled to refuse to sell it to you. However, most will. I have absolutely no problem in popping into say, Day Lewis pharmacies and picking up a treatment pack from the shelf and never have I been asked for my age or denied the opportunity to buy it. It appears to be only some Boots branches that are the problem.
I guess the rationale for the age limit is actually that it's a bit more rare for under 18s and over 65s to suffer from vaginal thrush as they are deemed to be not sexually active and therefore less likely to get it, which is of course a nonsense, and by the age of 65 anyway, most of us have a darned good idea of when we have vaginal thrush. Further, the idea of bothering a doctor in this day and age with a simple case of thrush, boggles the mind as it would take at least three weeks of severe vaginal itching to obtain a GP appointment in most areas of the country.
The answer is simple for me. I just don't use Boots for over the counter medications any more, except my little local one where I am known and treated with a bit of respect, something that many Boots pharmacy employees seem to have little idea about.
thanks your response..I managed some research and found that some anti biotics are the cause as they kill of bacteria, so fingers crossed as I have finished the anti biotics every thing will clear up
