Buying Maternity Wear

Hi Ladies,

I am looking for some advice on order maternity wear in advance of a huge bump.

I am 10 weeks now and starting to show a little, especially as the day goes on, can no longer do up my favourite jeans so am looking to order some clothes. There are some lovely skater dresses and such in the sales and with this being a summer baby thought I would start to put together a Gok Wan for 'Mother To Be Capsule Wardrobe' and seeing as we don't wear these clothes for long am reluctant to spend silly money when babies cost the earth too :)

My question is, do we go up a size or 2 as the pregnancy progresses or buy the same size as normal but in maternity ranges? My bust has already been privy to some new support bras and whilst my cup size stayed the same I was put in a 36" when am normally a 32" so I have room to 'expand'....sounds lovely eh!!

What to do? What's your experiences with your ever changing body? Thanks x :)

  • I'm 22 weeks I buy the same size clothes but in maternity, its just my bump that needs the extra room so far, but u never know by the next 18 weeks I might go up a size.

I wrote a blog on maternity clothing and lots of ideas where to go shop, here are some!

    Next

    Asda

    Asos

    Red herring

    Ebay

    Amazon

    Tesco

The supermarkets are the cheapest, but next, asos and red herring ate my fave:)

  • I figured this is probably not the time for investment pieces - I'm 23 weeks now and I think I was right. My bust has gone from a 32E to a 36FF, the rest of me is still a size twelve. In your third trimester your rib cage exands to make way for your belly. On the high street, I like H&M, but have just bought as I've gone along and this has really worked. I would buy a swimsuit later from ebay. The non-maternity dresses I thought I'd wear until summer due to their ample cut or stretchiness are still really comfy, but getting shorter all the time as the bump grows! This may happen with your skater dresses.

I will probably buy one or two more summer dresses. I'm hoping that I can find ones that are good for nursing afterwards.

  • It all depends, I'm 34wks and still buy size 10 in maternity clothes, I just have a bump n nt overly large (big enough) like u I had to get new clothes early on so would defo buy mat clothes, new look had a good selection and cheap

If its just u can't do ur jeans up u can buy expanders and I still get away with a lot of my tops that ain't tight, I bought 3 pairs of jeans but as time gone on I hate things touching my belly so tend to live in trackless or leggings

  • KC1983 I think your computer is having a moment, I have 5 replies from you, I can't delete the extra ones, don't know if you can?

  • I got some great nursing tops in the mothercare sale and they can be used during pregnancy too. it was buy one get one free when I got mine.

next are great for work stuff and jeans and Asos have some fab dresses.

  • New Look have loads of maternity clothes online. I've just bought my first pair of maternity jeans and they are the comfiest jeans I've ever owned!

  • I found depending on the item i've needed to go up a size. Im now 34wks and I've gone up another dress size so I've invested in leggings and making my tops last! If its a loose fitting or very strechy maybe go for your size or one up but don't buy too much get some basics right now

  • I really struggled to get decent and reasonably priced work suits,, I'm 29wks now and usually an 8-10 and I heave so far got away with normal work suit dresses with a jacket, just bought size 12 and got some great items cheap in george and in the next sale...maternity stuff was so much more expensive! Cxx

  • I wear a uniform for work and am starting to Harras for new trousers! My clothes will just be leisure wear so I guess I am lucky like that

  • I'm 18 weeks this week and can thankfully still get into my normal clothes - a lot of my workwear are M&S jersey wrap dresses - cut just below the bust line and plenty of stretch so hopefully will see me through. Similar to this: m.marksandspencer.com/mt/ww...

I've brought a few pairs of Tesco's leggings, which have lots of give at the waist @ £6 a pair... Primark's ones are crap! I have also brought a few oversized shirts from Primark - only £6 each. I figured they would do, and that only a brave and stupid person would tell a day and hormonal lady they were inappropriately dressed... ;/)

  • Fat and hormonal, even!

  • Have a look on ebay, most of the clothes are hardly worn as not in them for long. Get your normal size in maternity clothes.

  • Thanks ladies, all very helpful info xx

  • I am on baby number 3 and havent bothered buying maternity clothes for ANY of my pregnancies..... it's sooooo expensive and money i'd much rather spend on the baby rather than a top i'll only wear for a few months.

I went to peacocks and bought a few pairs of leggings 2 sizes bigger than usual and a few long vest tops which i mix with long cardi's i already had and maxi dresses from last summer..... done! :)

  • hiya i just bought maternity clothes in same size the whole way through my pregnancy and are good for after the baby as u can still wear them until u have lost the baby weight lol i just got trousers and leggings tho i got loads of nice tops and dresses off ebay coz then it didnt matter if they stretched as i would only bid about £2 on them saves u alot of money than buying brand new tops all the time because ur belly will get aot bigger yet my bump didnt properly show until about 30 weeks xx
