someone please help :(

yesterday I went for my 20 week scan, baby was moving around and the heart was beating as normal however I have been referred to a consultant as there was a shadow next to the heart which they were unsure what it was they said it could be nothing but it could be something then the girl scanning me said it could be a hole and stuff from the stomach could be popping through I am trying not to worry but it's hard for me to stay strong has anyone else had this before?

Don't worry about it it could be a ton of things. It would just be something to do with the amniotic fluid as my scan seemed to be shadowy by after another all was ok just see the consultant and go from there I guess

By the way, my sister just gave birth three weeks ago, he was born with a hole in his heart, he got sent to the consultant and within two weeks it had healed by itself

I would just add that apparently heart-related issues are the most common type of issue that show up on scans, and most of them resolve themselves before birth. Even if they don't, it's not necessariy a problem. As skyblueboston says, holes in the heart are quite common: an ex-boyfriend of mine had one and it never affected him at all, and some other friends have just had a baby boy who had one. He had one operation and as far as I know, things have been absolutely fine since. I know it's hard, but try not to think about it until you've seen the consultant. All the best
