I think I may be pregnant but I drunk heavily at the weekend, help!

I am 2 weeks late for my period and have been craving fish, avocado and sweet potato in the last week. My long term boyfriend and I have not been using any contraception since I came off the pill 5 months ago, but I did'nt think there was much chance of me getting pregnant as I have been managing an addiction to over the counter painkillers containing codeine for a year. I am now off the painkillers completely from the last 2 weeks and I believe its at this time we may have conceived.

My breasts aren't sore or haven't gotten any bigger (shame!) and I haven't had any morning sickness but I am having real trouble sleeping (hot flushes) and I have a nasty cold/cough as well

I had a strong desire to quite smoking yesterday which I did, I bought nicotine patches and have been using them for less than 24 hours and I'm finding it very easy and am not craving cigarettes at all whereas before I was smoking between 5 and 10 a day and would get bad cravings and become very moody if I didn't have one.

It was my birthday at the weekend and I had a massive party where I drank around 30 units of alcohol over a course of the weekend, I'm worried about the effect this will have at this early stage if I am pregnant, if the baby will survive or be born with FAS (terrifying)

My boyfriend and I would be over the moon if I was pregnant, albeit a little untimely but hey is there ever a 'right' time?

I know I need to take a pregnancy test to be sure, but if anyone has been in a similar situation and can offer any advice I'd be really grateful.

Thank you.

  • Drinking at the point of conception or very early weeks of pregnancy should not harm the the cluster of cells forming, if it does interfere with the development process at this stage then your body would miscarry the pregnancy. I was drinking the weekend before I knew I was pregnant got drunk so quickly, I'm now 20 weeks:)

  • I discovered I was pregnant after my wedding and honeymoon, and on bot occasions I had many drinks. When I realized I was pregnant, I immediately talked to my GP because I was so worried. He told me exactly the same as Skyblueboston wrote. Many women drink alcohol during the very first weeks, not knowing they are pregnant. If the alcohol had caused any damage, you would know by now so try not to worry anymore. All the best to you!

  • I recently had a healthy baby boy. I didn't know I was having a baby until I went in to labour. I smoked between 20-30 cigarettes a day and drank on a couple of occasions quite heavily - 7 days before I had my son I was extremely drunk.

Obviously my situation is not the norm but at the same time my child is healthy. In your case I would take a pregnancy test and once you know one way or another you then know if you will be able to have another drink or if you will have to wait 9 months (or longer if breastfeeding)

  • I imagine a lot of people were conceived when mum had had a few!! And I think it is very common people drink in the first few weeks, before they know. I agree on the smoking thing - I was smoking about 10 or 15 a day and suddenly just went right off them, couldn't stand the smell before I missed a period or anything - just gave up cold and couldn't stand to be near them. Alcohol for me is the same, it suddenly started to smell like really strong raw yeast. Yuk!
