Migraines can anyone help?

I'm now nearly 12 weeks and have been getting the worst migraines. Today it's so bad that I'm struggling to eat and can't get out of bed. I had a late miscarriage (19weeks) with my last pregnancy so I'm scared to take any paracetamol as know I will blame that if it all goes wrong again. Does anyone have any tips on what can help?

Hi cb2012,

I'm sorry to hear about your migraines. Our article 'Pregnancy symptoms to look out for': nct.org.uk/pregnancy/pregna... does have some information on headaches you may be experiencing at this time.

As someone who experiences migraines herself, all I can personally recommend is that you lie in a darkened room; put a cushion or two under your knees, raising them slightly, and lay a cold cloth on your forehead and wait for the migraine to pass.

If you do appear to be getting them on a regular basis do arrange to see your GP as soon as possible.

I hope this helps.

Sorry abt that u can take paracetamol if it persists cos is very safe. Just try and sleep and rest very well. Do take care.

Just an idea, could it be that you're becoming anemic? Pregnancy can cause that. I started having headaches, (not quite the same as migrains perhaps, but a big thing for me as I'd never had anything like that before), but soon after I started on multivitamins and a nutrient rich diet, they went away. Ask your doctor, he should be able to do a blood test on you to find out. If you decide to go directly to a health food shop or chemists, make sure you tell them you're pregnant, as you'd be surprised what you can't take, plus the dosages are all different for pregnant women.

My midwife also told me that I could use 4 head stick which I have don, to try and nip it in the bud. This is coming from someone who was so scared to use anything for the first ten weeks that my migraines lasted three days at a time. Only to find out that I needn't have suffered.
