Spotting and cramping - abroad on holiday :-(

I found out just before I came on holiday that I'm pregnant with my first. I'm 40 and hadn't prepared for it...no folic acid and was drinking until I found out. I reckon I'm about 8 or 9 weeks. Over the last three days I've had a bit of spotting, really just when wiping, but I've also been having cramps. My GP did warn that it was common to bleed between 6 and 8 weeks, and advised complete rest if it happened, so I have been doing that. I am worried sick but don't fly home for another 7 days and I don't know what to do....help!

Have you got a phone number for your GP or midwife? Could you possibly call them and just explain? Your following your gp's instructions which is obviously of importance. Try not to panic, keep positive. Bleeding in pregnancys is common. Also so is cramping - your uterus is perhaps simply stretching to make room for the baby to fit. I hope for the best for you, and wish you all of luck in the future. Try to relax and enjoy your holiday. :) Congratulations on your pregnancy x

Hi,

1. Please don't worry about the drinking etc it doesn't make a huge difference in early pregnancy.

2. Someone women spot and bleed regularly through there pregnancy so it may be normal. But if your doctor advised you to rest please do! If there is anything going on with your baby there is nothing a doctor can do I'm afraid. So relax, try and enjoy the rest of your holiday, contact your GP and request a telephone appointment or NHS direct and wait to see what happens.

I'm sorry you are having to go through this, just be strong and try to relax.

If you start to bleed heavily and with blood clots go to your nearest hospital.

Take care x

Hi

Thanks to both of you for your replies. The cramping got quite severe for a few hours yesterday, and this was accompanied by heavy bleeding and clots - I'm pretty sure it's gone now :-( There is a doctors surgery for tourists this afternoon so I am going along to that, although I'm not sure they will do anything for me. I just can't bear the thought of waiting another week. I have to say that for the last 1-2 weeks I haven't felt any of the pregnancy symptoms that I had been experiencing - nausea, sore breasts - so I am prepared for the worst :-( Thanks again, don't know what I would do without the Internet! Hubby is at a loss as to what to say or do...his answer is to go out and buy chocolate! xx

Good luck with your visit to the doctor. Fingers crossed!

My hubby didn't quite know what to say either. And he was as lovely and supportive as he could be.

Lots of people here ready to lend an ear.

Thanks for the support ladies. Sadly no good news. The doctor sent me to see a gynaecologist tonight who did an ultrasound which showed there was nothing there. The gynaecologist is insisting I now attend the hospital, and wanted me to go tonight to be admitted overnight but I really didn't want to do that. Do any of you know if it's really necessary to attend hospital? I would have thought it would just run its course but my husband is insisting we go first thing tomorrow. Any advice appreciated! xx
