Chemical pregnancy and breastfeeding please help!?

Hi can anyone help. I think I may have had a chemical pregnancy.

So I took a test two days ago and had a faint line I then took a digital it said 1-2 . I am breastfeeding my 1 year old at night. I went to the toilet to take a cheap test and there was a faint line but when wiped I had fresh blood spotting.. Could breastfeeding be the reason it didn't carry through? Has anyone been breastfeeding and conceived but then had chemical?

Hi,

Are you assuming you've had a chemical based on a one-off spotting or has it turned into more bleeding now? A best friend of mine fell pregnant exactly 4 weeks after giving birth to her 2nd, she was breastfeeding and used a condom...go figure! She had some pink spotting around 4 weeks later and this was the only reason she tested as it was abnormal for her based on previous postpartum/breastfeeding.

Anyway, sorry I can't offer much insight into the chemical question as I wasn't breastfeeding at the time so got a period but if you've had a recent positive digital pregnancy test and only 1 occasion of spotting I wouldn't assume you've lost the pregnancy. Why not call your GP Monday morning and see if they're prepared to offer a blood test?

It's turned to full on bleeding with clots. I have took a first response and there is a faint line still.

Do I need to contact them? I mean if I'm bleeding full on then it's gone.

It could be a chemical pregnancy but it could be something that needs medical attention if you're bleeding heavily with clots. It's entirely your instinct my love. If it were me, I'd call NHS 111 tonight and just check what they advise for peace of mind, particularly when you've got a 1 year old and not able to just completely rest x

I have had a miscarriage before I conceived my son I was 7 weeks pregnant then and was a lot worse... But this time I was 4 weeks... But definitely will phone gp on Monday morning. X

I'm fine 😌 it's just I hope it's not breastfeeding caused it because I want to get pregnant with my final baby I have a 6 year old girl. We just want one more and I'm breastfeeding. my heart is not ready to stop breastfeeding because my son really enjoys it..so can't bring my self to stop it.. I really hope it won't stop us conceiving. X

No breastfeeding wouldn't be the reason for a chemical pregnancy, if you've only had a little bit of bleeding maybe it's just implantation bleeding though, so you might still be pregnant. Bleeding doesn't always mean a miscarriage. Maybe take another test in a week and see what it says. Fingers crossed for you x

It's full on bleed now with clots. Seb how do you know for sure that breastfeeding doesn't cause chemical pregnancy. I'm breast feeding him now because my mommy heart can't let go 😭 and he does not want to stop. Bless him

I know for sure because millions of woman breastfed and have healthy pregnancies. If breastfeeding was known to cause miscarriages then all medical advice would be to stop feeding one before trying to get pregnant. There is absolutely nothing you could have done differently, that would have affected the outcome of this pregnancy. 1 in 5 pregnancies sadly end in miscarriage, it's heartbreaking but please don't think that it's anything you have done xx

Just to add to this so many women breastfed through pregnancy. I breastfed all the way through my 2nd pregnancy and everything was fine. Nothing you did made this happen

Whilst breast feeding can reduce the chances of getting pregnant for some women (can delay normal cycles returning after birth for a few months) there hasn’t been any medical advise that it affects how your body reacts to a pregnancy, chemical pregnancies are very common and if you’ve had one it is absolutely nothing you have done. In most cases the embryo just wasn’t viable so the pregnancy doesn’t continue (this is what I was told after mine by fertility consultant) it can take a week or 2 at that stage for the HCG levels to leave your system (why it might still be showing positive) but if the positive tests continue or you get pain I would contact EPU to check a few things 1) that if it is a chemical all the pregnancy tissue has passed

2) that it’s not eptopic

3) if the lines on tests get darker it may not have been a miscarriage (I bled VERY heavily with clots and had a hematoma but pregnancy continued)
