Newborn poo struggles!

Hey ladies!

My 1 month old son has been on Aptamil 1 Baby First Infant Formula (powder) since birth and yesterday afternoon started to struggle for a poo.

Normally he'll poo without issues during a feed but now he's twisting and turning his body just to squeeze anything out (face goes red and grunting increases). Poo is passing and is the usual colour, but it's on a much smaller scale. He is farting a lot - in his sleep too! He takes 120ml every 3 hours and burping as normal in feeds.

Has anyone had a similar problem with the brand and moved to the Comfort version instead (for colic and constipation)? Did it work? Or would you recommend a different brand entirely? Or is this just a normal phase for newborns?

Thank you in advance!

Hi lovely, we have a had a sort of similar situation and changed to the comfort. Baby is 7 weeks and we were topping up with formula after breast feeding. We also used the normal Aptamil. He was feeding happily and then one day he just changed and he would be crying, screaming and pulling his legs up during feed. It was just heartbreaking as I felt he never enjoyed his feeds. The midwife explained that at this age their stomach as still maturing and his stomach is probably struggling to break up the formula. We changed to Aptmil comfort and definitely seen a difference after a few days. I don’t believe he was constipated I believe his issue is trapped wind as he still does have episodes now but he goes every day and a good amount.

If you do decide to change to the comfort be warned their poop turns green and there is more of a smell to it so it does make nappy changing interesting 🤣

Hope you find something that works xxx

Thank you so much and I feel exactly the same when he's crying. Thanks for the warning also, can't say I'm looking forward to that haha xx

Hiya, we had a similar situation but my daughter was premature and was awful seeing her in so much discomfort. After what felt like weeks not getting anywhere with the GP although after I got very rude which is not like me they finally prescribed laxative for her but I found the problem significantly reduced by changing her formula to Goats milk which she has alongside breast milk. It’s bloody expensive but very worth it so maybe the change in formula will do good. I was told not to change it but so glad we trusted our gut instinct and did. Good luck xx

Sending a delayed thank you! We ended up changing to Comfort (so many poo explosions though!) and then back to the original around 4 months, pooing is a breeze now haha xx
