Breast feeding

Hi all, my baby was born by c section on Monday and I have been trying to feed. For the first few days he was feeding fine and now he seems to struggle to latch on. I have got a Breast pump and I am producing plenty of milk but it just takes a while for it to start coming out. Am I ok to pump and give him the milk in a bottle at this early stage just whilst we try to get to the bottom of the latching problems? Thanks for your help

Yes you're absolutely fine to start pumping until your latching issues are solved, to up and keep your supply going you will have to pump a fair bit, but it will stop you getting engorged and rising mastitis. I would have a tad up about pace feeding the bottles, so that baby doesn't get a bottle preference as getting milk from the bottle is going to be easier that from breast. You could also try nipple shields if you've not already, they might make it easier for him to latch at first. Have you spoken to your health visitor or midwife about your latching issues as they should be able to arrange a visit for you to be seen and helped.

Or have you tried contacting La Leche leave they often have councillors who can help. They may have someone in your area who can help or you can call their main phoneline if you don't have anyone local to you

Hey there, I wasn’t successful in breastfeeding my son after csection - we had a similar experience and what nobody told us was that when you have a csection it can take up to 5/6 days for you milk to come in - this made my baby fuss snd not want to latch on as he wasn’t getting any milk. Not sure if this will apply to you but thought I would mention. Good luck x

Hey,Have you tried switching the position you feed in?

For us the rugby/football hold worked well for my son to latch properly and for me as he wasn’t on my tummy.

Also have you checked inside his mouth for any tongue/lip tie?
