Hello mummies. I am a first time mum and my due date is 22nd December. I intend to breast feed and also pump. Any suggestions on what brand of pump to get that is affordable and works well.?

Get your self one of these for sure it attaches onto the opposite breast your feeding from and catches all the milk that leaks. I can sometimes catch enough milk for an entire feed. Also doesn't hurt. Highly recommend I'm also a first time mum breastfeeding. I also bought a Bella baby pump but haven't ending up using it.

It might be worth waiting to get a pump, I bought one and used it a bit but my little one never took a bottle no matter what we did so anything I pumped ended up in the bin. You never know how it will work out and you can get hold of things pretty quickly if you need them.

I wouldn't rush in to buying a pump, you need to establish a good supply when breastfeedimg which takes a few weeks a pump could interfere with this,if i were you see how you get on then think about buying a pump. I EBF my first and now on my 2nd who is 12 wks old, i have a haaka which catches milk from the opposite side baby is feeding on so no milk wasted,but again would wait before starting use of this. Honestly try breastfeeding and see how you feel before investing in a pump. X

Ok. Thanks. I will start up breast feeding but I figured I need a pump so that baby's daddy or grandma can also get to feed baby when I need to rest. The haakaa sounds like a good option too. Thank you

I got a version of the hakka from Aldi, think it was a fiver. I use it every day, they’re great.

I would agree with everything that’s already been said. Wait a while. My little girl is 9 months and has been EBF, when she was about 2 months I worried about her Daddy not being able to feed her so tried pumping but I found it so stressful trying to find time to pump. In those early days when baby is sleeping you want to rest NOT get your breast pump out - trust me! When I had managed to she wouldn’t take the bottle from hubby anyway so I ended up bottle feeding her breast milk which just seemed mad to me! So I stopped, started up again in time to go back to work which has been far less stressful and I use the medela swing. More expensive than some but very efficient. I also found their teat was the only one my daughter will take as it’s the closest thing I could find to an actual breast. Good luck with everything, super exciting times ahead! Xxx

I don't fully agree with the advice not to buy one. If you have feeding difficulties, as we did (tongue tie related in our case) then pumping can be important to help establish supply. You can get it afterwards (or rent one), but that is a lot to think about on top of everything else, so it might be easier to get at least a manual one in advance, just in case it's needed. Longer term, the best option probably depends on what your plans are - and for that it may be worth waiting before spending a lot - for frequent use, I found the Spectra S1 (battery powered double pump) excellent.

Have you considered learning to hand-express before the birth? It's a great and free alternative.

Yes I thought of that too but I am due on Tuesday 22nd December and my breast milk is not flowing yet.

I am only learning about it. What I know though is that in the first days you only produce colostrum (and a very little quantity of it, just a few drops each time!), because it is your baby latching and feeding often (and hand-expressing and/or pumping) over the first 3 - 4 days that will cause your breasts to start to produce milk, which will happen in a few days. I believe a pump won't speed up the milk production more than the hand-expression: it will just be different in terms of how convenient it is for you / how you prefer it - but both use "compression" to push the liquid out (a baby feeding uses both compression and suction). If I were this close, I would call my midwife and ask her what she thinks of trying to do this now.

Hello, not sure if its any help at all. But I had to wait 2 weeks after birth to pump any breastmilk for bottles/storage.

My little one is five weeks on Wednesday and only just started to pump every day for bottles.
