How long did you stay in hospital after your c-section?

I’ve heard some women are being discharged the following day, not sure if that’s now the norm or because of COVID.

I had a c section last august! Baby was born at lunch time on the Saturday and I was home Sunday afternoon xx

in reply to Lisaworthy1981

Wow that’s so quick! For my previous c-section I was in for 4 days- which at the time was the norm.

My older son is 17 and I was in for 5 days when I had him xx

I was in two days but only because my daughter had suspected sepsis. Otherwise I would of been home the next day x

in reply to

I guess if nothing is wrong it’s best to get home anyways :)

in reply to

Yes I would much rather of been at home recovering especially when I had someone across from me moaning about stomach pain and wanted to jump out the window because of it. Turns out she just needed a big fart 🤣

My first baby 3 days, but second baby in 2019 the next day. It was SO much better to go home if you’re doing ok. You get a lot more sleep and have people to help.

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to AllWeNeedIsluv

I saw in the hospital the midwifes helping other ladies but my partner will help me with a taxi hopefully I do have a teenage son so he will probably have to step in a bit

How will it work with the virus can partners visit do you know if they can be present at birth?

AllWeNeedIsluv profile image
AllWeNeedIsluv in reply to Afrohair

Far as i know their allowed when your having bubu and an hour after then they have to go. Ask your hospital what their protocol is. I'd be so stressed if i was you your not far now. Get info from your hospital and put a plan together you'll feel so much better. Xx

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to AllWeNeedIsluv

That's awful not a very long time for partner to stay x

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to AllWeNeedIsluv

Will your husband be driving you home then/getting in taxi with you- if so then he’ll be about to help you when you get home? You should be able to get more sleep compared to noisy hospital ward 🤣 And if your son is 15 he can definitely step up and help out! They seem to be allowing partners for the c-section and couple of hours after. Then some places have visiting hours but depends on the hospital. Check to see if yours has a maternity Facebook page with updates.

Afrohair in reply to claire16c

My husband will have 2 week of paternity ❤️But after that he works 12 hour shiftS so I'll be doing the night feed then take my other kids to school as he needs to sleep bit Naff really The paternity side . took me 3 month to recover last time my 15 year son will be at school.yeah hospitals can be noisy but then I probably get more rest in hospital lol 😂 Xx

in reply to Afrohair

My husband saved up his annual leave so he’ll be taking just over a month off. Is your hubby able to take any annual leave? I’m lucky my 15 year old is quite self sufficient. Must be tough having younger ones as well

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to

Hi love no he has asked for it but they have declined unfortunately they said too many people are off around the time I'll be having my baby x

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to

People didn't put there holidays in as usual and taking them last minute leaving very few staff just so happens to be when I'm having my baby

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to

My 15 year old is ok to watch the little ones but I don't like leaving him too long especially if I were to go into hospital they all think they are big lads at that age but I worry if there was ever an accident or something I wouldn't forgive myself I know I shouldn't think that way but I decided to have children I don't want to feel like I'm pushing the buck kind of thing either especially now he's older and wants to do his own thing in his free time x

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to AllWeNeedIsluv

Is your hubby getting paternity AllWeNeedIsluv

AllWeNeedIsluv profile image
AllWeNeedIsluv in reply to Afrohair

He's self employed so he's OK to be home if need be xx

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to AllWeNeedIsluv

That's good mine is only allowed two week he asked in advance if he could take holiday on top of that but they declined and said it would be unpaid if he was off extra !a bit disappointing

AllWeNeedIsluv profile image
AllWeNeedIsluv in reply to Afrohair

Its,rubbish this whole situation with working and how they treat people at important times. I'm so glad i started my own business at home no one to answer too but me. Xx

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to AllWeNeedIsluv

That's great! I always consider working from home and do a few side jobs. but if I was self employed I wouldn't have got sick pay when I really needed it ! self employed is nice not having to answer to anyone I had to go to the board of directors to be refurloughed at 28 weeks pregnant they kept trying to encourage me to come back and made me sign documents to say there not responsible if anything happens to me . if I was self employed I would have had more choice but least they pay a percentage for me being off now and I don't have to worry

in reply to Afrohair

That’s shocking! Sometimes employers forget that work is not life and family is more important! I read another post on here from a few years ago and there were some good tips on getting things prepped before you give birth to make it easier housework wise afterwards.

I've been stocking up on pot noodles and soup for kids, pasta shapes lol

in reply to Afrohair

That’s a great idea. I planned on cooking lots of food and freezing it so hubby and son can just pop them in the microwave. They are both capable cooks but can get lazy with food if I’m not around lol

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to

I planned on doing that but not sure if I'd have enough room in my freezer by time I've finished I think we need a chest freezer for that . luckily my son will attempt some cooking hopefully and I just get snack things in they love pot noodles and they are only 50p in Poundland I keep trying to pick them up to save but they keep getting eaten I'll just pick more up the week before c section

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to AllWeNeedIsluv

How long was your recovery my last c section I didn't go out for at least a month or 2 x

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to AllWeNeedIsluv

AllWeNeedIsluv in reply to Afrohair

Yeah i get that that is a bonus regards working for someone else.

Ill pm you regards my 3 ops i don't wanna scare the O P x

in reply to Afrohair

Mine was 15 years ago was an emergency. Was in hospital for 3 days discharged myself a day early as I couldn’t get any rest. I over did it and ended up with an infection in my wound but was quite functional on leaving the hospital. All in all took about a month to get off the pain killers etc and feel normal

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to

So sorry !I know my old friend over did hers and got an infection she thought cleaning up would do her good x

in reply to Afrohair

It was pretty scary but you are so right when they say rest don’t clean and be busy in the house it’s not a suggestion :) at least I know better for this time!

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to

Yeah we learn from our mistakes !i didn't even have the energy to do such things I didn't even walk when they told me to lol.i remember getting hubby half way through ward shouting him to get me a chair as I couldn't walk any steps further from my bed two metres away I'm always amazed by those up and about after c section !its so painful and major surgery the gas pains are awful aswell !must remember peppermint tea this time !

in reply to Afrohair

I got peppermint capsules from Holland and Barratt they are on sale for £3 (less than half price) and have great reviews ;)

Both mines were a lot longer than these ladies, first was 5 days then second was 10 but had lots of complications and needed another op. I hope this one is quicker but I'll pack for 10 days again just in case xx

in reply to AllWeNeedIsluv

I’m sorry to hear about the complications. Better safe than sorry I always prefer to over pack rather than under pack. 😀

I gave birth on the Thursday and would of been discharged on the Saturday but my notes or medication didn’t get done on time so I was discharged Sunday afternoon.

I had 2 pints of blood given so they wanted to monitor me.

in reply to Annalieseonline

That’s kind of what I was expecting. I guess every hospital is different and then it also depends on the individual circumstances.

I was in 2 nights but the drs had discharged me after 1 night - just something came up with the baby before we left that led to us staying another night.

I’d packed for 4 days and then some spares because that’s what it said on their website 😂

Thank you for sharing! I think I’m going to pack for 2 nights but have another bag packed at home that hubby can just bring/ swap out in case we stay longer.

When are you due?

in reply to Afrohair

21 Jan, but should have a ‘date’ for my c section soon although I’d love if they just gave me the 21st- What about you?

Afrohair profile image
Afrohair in reply to

I'm due 12th feb Wanting to do c section 5th feb as they don't want me to go in actual labour not got a set date yet from consultant though x❤️

in reply to Afrohair

Not long to go now! So exciting!

Annalieseonline profile image
Annalieseonline in reply to

Yes this is the best thing to do.

I packed for 7 days and had a small packs of nappies and 2 packs of wipes, and also had spares packed at home in case baby had to stay longer.

I didn’t want my partner going back and forth and leaving me alone in the hospital so had everything there (funny enough we went through a full pack of wipes, nearly went through the pack of nappy and definitely used all the clothes. My son was feeding a lot and would poo after every feed and even had one mini poo expulsion).

But with the way everything is covid I would just give the hospital a call and ask them what is there protocol right now for non complication and when there is a complication.

Also would your husband be able to come back and forth to drop any items.

in reply to Annalieseonline

I’ll ask my MW next week. I’m lucky we don’t live too far from the hospital and one named birth partner can visit between 9 and 7 everyday. They just changed the rules so partners can attend scans now so I’m hoping nothing changes within the month. Good to know about the nappies I’ve ordered stacks of them and wipes too.

I had c section on Saturday and was discharged on Monday but they wanted me to go on Sunday. I stayed longer as I hadn't had anyone to help. It wasn't a problem for them.

in reply to Andia1

That’s so lovely! I love hearing when hospitals are able to do what’s good for the patient not just medically but socially too :)
