Hi, I’m just under 29 weeks and in the same position. Been having a few really low emotional days recently. GD Is so frustrating. Cheese, nuts, avocados, hummus and peppers, combining things with peanut butter helps too. I hope your wife feels brighter soon 🙂

When I had gestational diabetes I just followed a low carb diet and did not eat anything high in sugar including tropical fruits and fruit juices. I looked online for recipes and ideas if I was stuck, plus there's lots of diabetes recipes if you Google them.

I mainly had a 3 egg omlette for my breakfast most days, with some tomatoes, mushrooms and cheese, really filling and kept my scores really low.

For lunch I would have a salad with lots of cucumber, carrots, seeds pumpkin and sunflower seeds, some meat chicken or ham mostly. For snacks I had nuts and cheeses baby bel were great to take to work and snack on and some fruit like apples and strawberries. I would sometimes have peanut butter on ryevita but I could only have 2 other wise my scores were to high.

For dinner we'd mostly meat with low carb vegetables, no potatoes or white rice or pasta. I could eat a small amount of brown pasta but even brown rice sent my levels high.

It's quite individual what you can eat,

I found I could tolerate oat crackers but not porridge or cereal like weetabix. It was a bit of trial and error with carbs, I couldn't touch potatoes, I could eat brown pasta but only the 1 serving which I think was 45g of dried pasta.

There's lots of information on diabetes diets on line and loads of low carb receipts that are really yummy. There are also sugar free sweets that are good for those times you want a sweet treat. The rhubarb and custard sweets from lidl were my favourite.

I think it's the healthiest I've ever eaten! I wish I'd kept it up after baby was born but I feel off the wagon and lived on chocolate hobnobs as soon as I found out the diabetes had gone 😂

Hope she finds some food she enjoys and keeps her scores down, I found after giving up booze, blue cheese, rare meat etc when being pregnant it was just giving up a few more things for the final part!

Hello sorry to hear you're I wife hasn't had much support. I found out yesterday I've got gestational diabetes and have had a phone call from a specialist midwife and dietitian. They are going to send me a kit to monitor blood sugars. Maybe if you call midwives you could get this. I've been advised to avoid cakes, biscuits, sweets, cereal, porridge. Eat wholegrain and wholemeal bread as much as possible, granary bread, basmati rice, brown rice, not to have a big portions of starchy food. Proteins like meat and fish are fine, veg are fine and fill up on these as you reduce starchy foods. Avoid fruit juices. Protein with starch slows digestion like egg on toast, peanut butter on toast. Natural yoghurt with nuts, seeds and berries good no honey. Hummus and veg food. Ready meals might affect blood sugar too much.
