polyhydramnios - too much amniotic fluid?

Hello,

Just got back from a 32 week growth scan (booked in because baby’s been measuring above 95th percentile) and have been told I have polyhydramnios.

I’ve been asked to go back tomorrow to repeat my glucose tolerance test which I previously passed about 7 weeks ago and have been told I’ll be induced early/probable c section. Of course I made the mistake of googling it when I left and am now freaking out - possible kidney/swallowing problems, genetic abnormalities, increased risk of still birth 😫.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Xx

Solly I’ve no experience of what you have been diagnosed with but I had noah by c section and all was good I had the incision at 5 minutes past 2 on and he was bornby 2.11 pm it’s a longer recovery process but with all procedure they have to tell you worst case scenario xx stop googling and try to stay calm for the remainder of your pregnancy the doctors will only do what is entirely necessary and remember they see this every day in different women and I believe little baby will be delivered safe and sound after your roller coaster ride your happy day is approaching I will keep you in my prayers and I eagerly await your miracle baby ending lots of love from the Irish one ☘️☘️☘️ Xxxx

Hi there,

I have had 2 c-sections and 2 normal deliveries. My last pregnancy I was diagnosed with Polyhydramnios and after a repeat diabetes test was also diagnosed with gestational diabetes, my first test was normal but 4 weeks later was not. I had to check my blood sugars 4 times a day and watched what I ate. I was admitted to hospital 2 days before the c-section and was given steroids intravenously and my blood sugars monitored every hour, which is normal practice. They said baby was going to be big, I had baby at 38+1 weeks and he was 8lbs 2 ounce, had I gone the full 40 weeks he could easily have been over 10lb, straight after delivery a pediatrician passed a tube through baby nose to his stomach to make sure there was no blockage and baby had his blood levels checked a few times after birth. He was completely fine, he is almost 4 months old now. He is still big for his age range, he is in 6 to 9 clothes already, but then his dad is a heavy built Egyptian, I'm English and not so big, so I think he has daddies growth genes 😂.

Try not to worry, you will have extra scans to monitor baby growth and extra apts with the doctor, make sure you to say whatever is on your mind, I did 😂.

I also had pelvic girdle pain and suffer Hemiplegic Migraines it's why they did my c-section at 38 weeks, otherwise I could have gone to 39 weeks.

It takes a bit longer to recover from c-section the area will be sore for a while, my advice is to rest as much as possible, when baby sleeps you sleep, take the painkillers regularly it really does help. Drink plenty of pure orange juice to help with constipation and mint tea to help settle your tummy after surgery. Also big knickers are a must.

They didn’t mention the tube down the nose thing although I’ve since read about this being likely so it’s good to be prepared. I redid my GTT on Friday and passed it so it’s not diabetes. Am just 🙏 it’s because he’s a big baby and nothing sinister. My partners a big guy too and was a massive baby so... 😂

I was just told this on Mon. Had my glucose test done today, still haven't heard anything back.

I done the exact same as you and googled and have been so stressed all week.

Can I ask if everything went ok during your birth?

Hi,

My glucose test came back normal and at that point they didn’t seem concerned. I had another scan at 36 weeks, and by then it had self corrected. I still had higher fluid levels but just within normal range when I gave birth. I had a c section (my choice not cause by the polyhydramnios in the end) - birth and baby were absolutely fine.

I hope everything’s ok with you, I remember being so worried. If it helps my midwife says it is often not caused by anything bad and it’s common for it to reduce by itself. Have they given you any further info? X

Hi firstly stop worrying. Like anything in pregnancy things can be different from one person to another. I’ve had 5 children and always had a lot of extra fluid and was huge in pregnancy. I didn’t have GD. I had normal labours and deliveries with no abnormalities. You will probably be consultant led now and have more scans (great to keep seeing growing baby). Good luck and try not to worry as that will affect baby x
