Cot/cot bed mattress recommendations?

Hi folks

There’s so much choice out there it’s overwhelming so thought I’d ask you guys - you’ve always been so helpful.

Looking for a mattress for my LB’s cot. He’s currently 4 months old and in a Snuz but is super long so we’ll be moving him to his big cot (staying in our room) soon. It’s a cot that turns into a bed later.

What mattresses did you buy/would you recommend? I’ve read that babies need a hard mattress until 1 year old then a softer one after that, is this right? Prices seem so extreme, really cheap mattresses to really expensive, is it a case of you get what you pay for?

I’m looking at The Little Green Sheep’s Twist mattress which is a bit pricey (gets great reviews) but on one side it’s hard for up to age 1 and the other side is softer for over 1. It’s meant to last them til age 5. Anyone have this mattress? thelittlegreensheep.co.uk/t...

Much appreciated! Xx

I got mine from mamas and papas and was just a silent night one designed for when they move into their cot. She still has it now at 2 years old. Didn’t know that you needed a new mattress as they got older xx

Thanks! Can’t go wrong with silent night, my own mattress is silent night. I’d never heard that before either so maybe it’s just come from mattress companies trying to get us to buy two 🤷‍♀️

Yeah that’s very true they probably are lol. I just presumed we could use ours until she needs a proper bed x

We have the little green sheep mattress and I think it is worth the cost. Not very thick (10cm deep) but does what it is suppose to. For me, it was as much about having natural materials for my little girl to sleep on. I got really paranoid about chemicals when my LG was a baby and she had the LGS crib mattress too 🙈 I've now bought her the LGS pillow (not recommended for under 12m). X

Thanks for your reply. Yes! I really like the sound of what it’s made of too. No nasty chemicals. Did you buy their mattress protector too? I wish I’d discovered them for his Snuz mattress, the one it comes with isn’t great. Ohhh they do pillows too 😆 they have some other things i like the look of like a teepee tent and sleeping bags.

Yes, I bought the mattress protector too. They also have duvets! I've seen the teepee and have been tempted to buy one - they are far more reasonably priced than some others I have seen.

Ohhhh, I need to have a proper look at their website😆! Does your LO use a duvet? Wondering what age I change from sleeping bags? My LO is a thrasher so think it’ll be a while in bags. What sheets do you use? I found it soooo hard to find sheets to fit the Snuz, hoping it’s not as hard with the cot mattress (presuming the mattresses are a standard size).

I don't have the duvet - I drew the line at spending £60 on a cot bed duvet! I did buy one from The Wool Room which had been reduced. Think it was £40 🙈 We are still using sleeping bags though. You don't really need to swap to a duvet until your son is in a bed and definitely not before he is 12 months old. My daughter is now in her toddler bed, but I find sleeping bags easier at the moment. Like your son, she is a massive fidget so I don't think a duvet would stay on the bed too well!

I've bought a couple of organic cotton bedsets from Debenhams which are quite nice, but snuz do some lovely rainbow cot bed sheets that I have my eye on. I think they sell the classic cloud pattern too.

Oh and the teepee tent is a very good price and looks lovely! If my LO was older I’d get him it

We got the premium dual core cotbed mattress from mamas and papas as it has one side for baby (more firm) then you can flip it over when they get to 1 year as the other side is a toddler mattress. We ordered a few months ago and delivery was slow (took a couple of weeks) so if it’s urgent maybe not for you? We wanted to minimise number of products we purchased (trying to save the planet) so we put our daughter straight into a nuna sena aire travel cot when born which we have used as her cot since (now 3 months old). Maybe this could be a solution if you don’t want the whole cotbed in Your room? The nuna is a great product, health visitor checked it out as a normal bed and was happy she daughter has always been happy in there!

I can’t remember the make of our mattress but she’s been using it since she was 8months (she’s now 21 months). It’s only a 10cm one, as they all are, but as a mum who’s ended up spending most nights falling asleep in the bed since we converted it to a toddler bed in December I can assure you it’s very comfortable. The lack of space less so.

We got her duvet cover and the bedding sets from Dunelm and they weren’t that pricy. The covers were about £9 and the actual duvet was around £15 (although I can’t remember exactly). She’s a wriggler too and found she got caught up in the sleeping bags which just frustrated her.

Thanks for the tips! I feel for you with the sleeping in her bed, I have all that to come. My LB loves to lift his legs in the air and thump them down so don’t think he’d be too happy without his sleeping bag for now 😆
