Anyone experienced migraines in pregnancy?

Hi

I am 18 weeks today and have had migraines on and off for a week. I have consulted the GP and midwife but, not much could be done. I am worried it is going to mean I develop something scary like preeclampsia... has anyone else ever experienced migraines in pregnancy?

I didn’t have this when I was pregnant with my son 2 years ago 😞

Thanks

Yes I did, I can’t remember what weeks exactly but think I had them for a few weeks towards the end of the first trimester. There was nothing behind it (probably the change in hormone balance?) and they went away on their own. At the time I asked on here and it seemed pretty common. Hopefully it’ll calm down for you xx

I had migraines and my midwife suggested magnesium supplements. Apparently Some pregnant women become deficient - might be worth a go x

I had migraines pre pregnancy with my cycle but sumatriptan worked great, I got horrendous 3 day migraines with 1 day breaks from about 7-10 weeks pregnant but cant take my medication. Paracetamol doesnt touch it. The only thing that does is pushing and rubbing the painful area and a hot shower. Midwife and consultant werent worried as I'm only 14 weeks now. It can be a sign of pre eclampsia but only later on I pregnancy. I would call your midwife tomorrow and explain the situation. I was offered beta blockers (Propanolol) as a preventative measure, but it causes small babies so I said I'd just suffer. I hope you get sorted xx

I’ve suffered from terrible headaches for a month between week 12and 16. Doctors were clueless as my blood pressure was really low. I started looking into it thinking perhaps my diet was to blame and googled low blood pressure diet. Came up with folic acid as the main factor and it was exactly at week 12 that I stopped taking folic acid. The moment I started taking it again the headaches were gone instantly.

Hi i had a permanent migraine right from week 14 with my daughter to the point where i had to stay off work and lay down in bed in dark for 6months as everytime i sat up i was violently sick. Going for my appointments was a nightmare. Doctors and consultant put it down to the mix of hormones. My bp was up and down right the way through too. The migraines eased at about 36weeks. However this pregnancy iv had an odd headache but nowhere near as bad as 1st pregnancy. Hope it eases for you soon, try and relax xx

Thanks for all the replies so far, I am taking a pregnancy vitamin with folic acid in I think, I was told to stay on that. The doctor did offer another tablet but, she didn’t know if it was safe in pregnancy.

Thanks for the tips and advise, I am trying to relax but, have a 2 year old so that can be difficult sometimes lol.

I am just so worried it will mean something awful in a month or so time and I can’t snap out of it 😞

I wouldn’t worry too much yet about pre-eclampsia. It tends to occur later in pregnancy (I had it with my first from 36weeks) migraines can just be down to the changes in hormones, if you start getting other symptoms along with the headaches like sudden swelling of hands and face and visual disturbances with the headaches then would maybe contact your midwife. I have had reoccurring headaches this pregnancy but now 39weeks and no pre-eclampsia so try not to worry!

Hi Woo,

I'm 10 weeks 3 days now and have had periodic ocular migraines. Luckily no pain but I get vision disturbance which lasts about an hour or bit more.

I would have worried but these are typical for me especially during changes, stress, altered sleep etc. I miss my caffeine so much. Being a nurse I lived on at least 2 teas and a coffee a day. So for me I know I'm out of my norm...plus all this covid craze.

Hope yours settles, talk to your OB or midwife!

Take care

I had some migraines on and off during my first trimester. I put it down to hormones as I used to get them during my menstrual cycle pre-pregnancy. They eased off after 20 weeks.

Hope your migraines settle soon, and if any worries let your midwife/obstetrician know xxx
