Average fetal weight at 27 weeks?

Hey everyone, my baby is measuring on the small side. I know I probably shouldn’t compare with others as it could just end up worrying me but I’d like to get more of an idea so what was your baby’s estimated fetal weight at 27 weeks?

What is the average?

Thank you.

Hi there Loads of love, I have an issue with blood flow to my uterus and I also have a very large benign tumour - (which is the reason I had tried for a 2nd child before they operate and most likely put me into surgical menopause) so they are concerned about growth so I am having regular scans. I had one last week at 29 weeks and they said my baby is measuring at 2lb or so and is smack bang in the middle of all of the charts for this time so on the 50th percentile. My son, my first child was always 99th percentile and still is - so considerably smaller this time around! Still plenty of growing time from 27 weeks and if they are concerned they will call you back for additional scans to keep an eye on the growth. Remember all babies are different even in the womb! Wishing you loads of luck!

Hi Sarah, thanks for your reply! Firstly, I’m so sorry to hear that but congrats on your pregnancy! What you’ve said shocks me as it contradicts what I have been told. My baby is estimated to be measuring 1lb 15ozs at 27+2 which I was told meant that she is below the 5th centile.

I’ve googled the average weight and keep getting conflicting answers so I suppose I’ll just wait and see and try not to worry!

Thanks for your help and good luck also! :)

Hi Loadsof love Congratulations to you too!! To be honest I was really really worried from 20 weeks as they were talking about IUGR due to the blood flow issue but both the radiologist and my consultant are not concerned at the moment. I am consultant led I’ve only seem the midwife twice in total, and I see the consultant after each scan to talk them through along with the normal appointments I saw her Tuesday and she seemed really happy with my babies progress and said everything looked good. Did they measure all the different body parts? As I had loads of different graphs on my scan report which showed that she/he is at an average rate for all parts. From what I have googled 2.5 pounds to 3+ seems to be what people are being told at this point. I have another scan in two weeks so I can check back here then and let you know what they say and how much the growth has changed if that will help how you feel too? But try not to worry they will keep a close eye on you and fingers crossed both our babies grow as they should over the coming weeks. Also how big are you and your partner, height etc if your both ‘compact’ then your baby is likely to be smaller too. As I said my first child is super tall! He is now 7 and wears 11-12 clothes And I’m 6 ft tall and my partner is only slightly shorter than me. I know it’s really worrying when you first find out everything may not be ‘perfect’ but try not to google to much as it just seems to add to the worry (especially for me!) and the doctors are there to take care of you and will scan you every week if necessary. And if the worry is getting to you at all then please ring one of the numbers on the front of your notes and talk to a midwife. Please Let me know how you get on xx

Aww bless you, I can see why you’d be worrying but great that they’re not concerned! You’ll be fine :) and that’s the same as me really, I’ve only seen my midwife once and I’m nearly 28 weeks lol.

Oh yes that’s true! Me and my partner are fairly small. I’m small and short and he’s probably average height for a man. His sister has a history of having small babies too! Yes they measured all sorts. Her HC is on the small side too.

We’re the opposite of you by the looks of it lol!

I will see how things go on the 12th of May (my next scan). Thank you so much for your comments, you’ve been so helpful.

I’m sure we will both be fine! And if it makes you feel any better I was born (8 weeks early) weighing 2lb 13 ounces in the 80s And grew to 6ft and that was with one parent of 5 ft and the other of 6”5 😁 and we have soooooo much better medical services for smaller babies now days. I will have everything crossed for you that the 12th of May next scan is much more reassuring! X

Hello my baby measured as slightly below average weight throughout my pregnancy but she was born weighing 6 pounds 7 , being 8 days early. Are you getting sent for another scan. I would not worry too much yet as you could be all baby and less fluid making the baby to appear smaller .

Hi Shisha, thank you for replying. I think you’re right so I’ll try not to worry too much! I’m going back for another scan in 3 weeks. They said depending on the results they might try amniocentesis or an MRI.

Yeah just try not worry too much. I knows its hard but hopefully the baby grows more within the next few weeks and it will all be ok x what is your fundal height

Yup, thank you so much. You’ve really helped to put my mind at rest. I don’t actually know my fundal height, had to google it to see what it even meant. No-one has took it so far and I haven’t got the right tape measure to check it myself lol. I’m quite round now though! :)

I would not worry about that too much either they usually start to measure it by time ur 28 weeks. Its not the most accurate measurement but they say ur fundal height should be on average the same as how many weeks you are. For example 27 inches at 27 weeks. It can also be 2cm below or above for e.g 29 inches at 27 weeks. Mine was always 2cm smaller indicating the baby was slightly smaller too but she was born healthy and her weight was fine too x

Oh right I see! That’s useful to know, thanks. They might check it at my next appointment then. Will be interested to find out! x
