Pregnancy scan nt fluid measuring 8mm

Hi I’ve had my 12 week scan to find a lot of fluid around the baby. We had another last week and it measured 7.9mm and this week 8mm. I’ve been booked in for an amniocentesis in a few weeks time. Has anyone else had a similar experience? The heart rate was good. However they did say the extra fluid can put a lot of pressure on the heart. They have indicated that the baby could have an underlying condition. Downs, turners or Noonans syndrome. But we won’t know until we get the tests done. I’m in limbo I feel 100% pregnant am just scared if something bad happens. If the baby does have an abnormality it will still be loved and wanted. A termination is not what we want. Just wondering has anyone on here carried a baby and delivered with same thing? And what you experienced? Thanks xx

I’m sorry this is happening to you, have you been given a level of risk from the combined testing? Also have you considered NIPT? X

Thanks for your reply. No they haven’t given us a level of risk. Just that the fluid can put pressure on the baby’s heart. The NIPT, is that the blood test? They said it was an option but I would need to have the amniocentesis anyway to confirm. It’s just the not knowing it’s horrible. They have been great at the hospital and offers me plenty of scans and been really supportive. X

Yes the NIPT is the blood test. We had the opposite scenario where our NT was normal but my bloods put us at high risk for DS. I had the NIPT but it was not considered diagnostic so I had an amnio too. The waiting is so hard I’m sorry you are having to go through all this. It’s great that you are being so well supported, we also had a detailed scan with a fetal med consultant x

We met with the fetal med specialist yesterday. Until about 16 weeks he can’t tell about the heart and also get the amniocentesis done. I’m almost 14weeks now. I just hope and pray for a favourable outcome x

I have a little boy who is 8 months old and absolutely incredible, oh and he has Down’s syndrome.

We didn’t have exactly the same experience as you (we declined screening and found out at 34 weeks pregnant he would likely have DS after opting to get NIPT when a growth scan picked out some markers) but I honestly can tell you I wouldn’t change a thing. I remember pre natally, I found all of this information really overwhelming, shocking and scary and that is completely ok. There are some great groups who can provide you with support if you need it, like positive about Down syndrome.

Congrats on your pregnancy, and I hope you can get the answers you need to enjoy the rest of it 😘 xx

Thanks for your reply. Congratulations on the birth of your son also. I’ve got my amniocentesis and microarray this week. I’d a scan on Thursday there and the fluid had got even more. If we get the results and the baby has downs I will be keeping it. It’s a gift and will be loved no matter what. I’m only 15 weeks now. They have said the fluid can put strain on its heart. We have found out so early it’s hard to know exactly what we are expecting. As you said all the information is so over whelming.
