Hi ladies... is it normal for baby to vomit whilst having a cold. Baby just woke up and is quite congested anyway and he vomited his yoghurt from this morning whilst coughing?

Totally normal for the gag reflex to kick in with excessive coughing no matter what age your child is. Hope he feels better soon xx

Sorry your little one isn’t feeling well. It sounds like it could be the congestion you mention but I’d just err on the side of caution and keep an eye on your babies temperature.

When our toddler [now 20 months] was a baby and started nursery we went through a period of colds and illnesses (including teething which was always accompanied by cold-like symptoms in our case) back-to-back for what felt like almost a year and I was concerned. That said, he had episodes of vomiting during just two of the colds and both turned out to be a tummy bug/tummy virus. It’s very very common and usually nothing to worry about.

Usually these would be accompanied by a high temperature and of course grumpiness, changes in appetite, clinginess, etc. Just keep a wee eye out for these signs too. We use calpol whenever he has a temperature and it eases his symptoms.

To help with the cold and congestion we use a Calpol plug-in for colds (it has these little pads that you slide in the top and they give off a wonderful smell that helps clear the nasal passages) and also a small humidifier which isn’t specifically for kids but works wonders. We got ours online from muji. You add water to the reservoir and just two to four drops of essential oils and then choose the run-time (usually just an hour or two overnight or during naps works well for us).

I’d recommend the oilbas for children essential oil, or eucalyptus, lavender and tee tree (usually just one drop of this) to help clear and cleanse the nasal passages and air. I find it works really well for us adults too! Just don’t put in too many drops of oil as this can sting your eyes (learnt by my own mistake once!)

You could also try raising your babies mattress slightly at the head end (or in our case both since our toddler moves around a lot and is in a cot bed so has lots of space). We use a rolled up towel or a couple of towels folded on top of the other in a stair fashion, just to raise it a little.

Lastly, if you feel at any point that it’s not clearing up and there aren’t signs of improvement in the next couple of days - or if you just have an instinctive feeling something isn’t right, don’t hesitate to get in touch with a doctor. It will put your mind at ease and they won’t think you are silly for being concerned.

All the best and I hope your little ones cold clears up soon x x
