Pregnant at 40 with Clomid

Hello, I had one cycle Clomid as I got quite strong PCOS.I took it through reproductive centre and before Christmas when I went for my 1st scan they said I got some follicles but too small and that was just a waste of time to check again in 2 days time as I was going away for a week. The nurse said it was a waste of time to go and that I had to take double dose on next period, that I could try to conceive but was very unlikely and there was no harm at trying. I tried maybe 2/3 times around Xmas and NYE and on Saturday just out of curiosity I got a test as my period was 50 days late or so but last time was 45 so I did not expect a positive result. Now I am extremely worried it could be twins or more and also my gp said Beta-HCG is not required.I don't know what to expect..please any advice?

Hi if you're in the UK and have got a positive test, you can normally self refer to the midwives and they set up any tests and your scans. I didn't see my GP the entire time I was pregnant.

Clomid doesn't mean that you'll have a multiple pregnancy, so maybe try not to worry about that until you have your scans. If you're unsure of your dates they can arrange a dating scan.

Thanks for your answer . I live in the UK. I arranged already a midwife appointment. 6th December last period and 1st check 6th Feb. I thought it was too late. Completely unsure of the dates as my period is always long and irregular, furthermore the 18th December at the only monitoring they made ..I have been said in14 days or So you will have your period. Otherwise would not have unprotected sex risking multiple pregnancy . Is it true that in the UK amniocentes is not mandatory after a certain age ?

You normally go for a booking in appointment at around 8/10 weeks so February would be about right. The midwife will give you a green book to document your pregnancy.

The booking in also takes blood for screening for any issues with you such as , hiv, chlamydia etc. I can't remember all the screening but they run through it with you.

They arrange for your 12 week scans at that point and then you wait until that scan.

After 12 week scan, for baby screening you'll normally see the midwife at 16 weeks, have another scan at 20 weeks, then more appointments as you get further along.

You never have to have any screenings or amniocentesis, you can decline any tests if you do not want them. Amniocentesis is normally not offered as standard unless the initial screening shows anything worrying and you can still decline it.

Thanks .Yes I am reading it. I don't understand how they can work out my real weeks as this was unlikely to happen and it was supposed to be no ovulation at all. Well being 40 I hope to get chromosome tests. In my country there is I guess a blood test not sure at what stage and after 35 amniocentes is normally offered to everyone. Thanks for info.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I became pregnant with my daughter on clomid ( after treating endometriosis) they took my home tests as adequate enough no HCG bloods were arranged ( home tests are very reliable these days) I was told I couldn’t book to see the midwife until I was 8 weeks. Everything you’ve been told sounds standard. All the best with your pregnancy xxx

Thank you Jess, for now I am just very worried to feel happy. I have always thought I would be a mum in my country and followed by my gyne who had me under his care forever, But I moved here more than 4 yrs ago and the way this is dealt is obviously new and very different than a private doctor. I know for sure that this must have happened after the 18th of December as my only scan at reproductive centre was that day and no intercourse at all. Scan where I was told that clomid failed and follicoles were too small and something also about endometrio as well, this made them say to me that I was going to have my period in 14 days and even if I tried was highly unlikely. I hope to have a bit more attention in the future...especially as I am 40 and there are more chances to get issues during pregnancy and more cromosome defects as well.

It’s hard to relax when it’s such a wanted pregnancy. I had a 7 year struggle to conceive my daughter the entire pregnancy I worried. I couldn’t believe she was “ real” until she arrived. The midwife will go through the questionnaire & determine if you are low or high risk pregnancy. If you are assessed as higher risk & have additional monitoring. Private scan might help reassure you? I wouldn’t have one until 7 weeks as sometimes you can’t detect the heartbeat until then. One of the ladies here was told her 4th round of clomid failed but had a successful pregnancy instead! They don’t always get it right. The early days are tough but I hope it all goes smoothly keep us posted xxx
