Blood in snot - anyone got any experience of this?

My 7 month old has got cold and gets super congested at night, for the last few days he’s had blood in his snot - not much, sometimes it’s pinkish, sometimes more red and other times it’s dried round his nostrils. I’ve had him to the GP twice and both times (different doctors) have reassured me it’s just a result of the cold and will clear up when the cold does. I just wondered whether anyone else had experienced this and how long it went on for? I see the blood and panic 😢 My little one is normal and happy and not unwell at all through the day but is very congested at night. We’ve been using a humidifier and a vapour rub but it doesn’t seem to help. Anyone else?

Thank you!

Not sure if it’s any comfort to you (obviously different circumstances) but I’m pregnant with a cold myself and I get exactly the same issue and was also reassured it’s normal. Xx

Thank you, it is good to hear that you’ve had a similar experience - like you say it’s different circumstances but you’d think the human body would work the same whether an adult or a child with something like this so thank you for responding. Good luck with your pregnancy and I hope your cold clears up soon!! Xx

My 5 month old had this a few weeks ago when his nose was congested. I get it too. It’s just inflammation causing tiny blood vessels to burst. It’s scary to see blood anywhere related to our little ones, but my partner looked it up and what he read said it was ‘normal’. Of course if it went on for a long time or was excessive I’d get it checked out again.

We used nasal drops (snuffle drops) and an aspirator to help clear his nose when really needed, plus a humidifier, sitting in a steamy bathroom and a calpol plug in. These things helped alleviate the symptoms but it had to run its course and took just under two weeks before his nose was clear again

Thank you for your reply - it’s good to hear someone else has had a similar condition and that it is normal. You are right, it is frightening to see blood, I just hope his cold hurries up and clears so it goes away! Thanks again for your reassurance x
