How many oz's should my baby be having.

Hello. My baby is 4months and 19days old. She's a bit of a chunk, on the 7th of this month she weighed 14lbs 2oz. She's currently having 6oz formula bottles every 3hrs so she can have between 4-5 bottles a day depending when she's got up. But she sleeps from 9pm until 7:30-9am without any feeds. And recently after her finishing her bottles she's getting upset like I've taken it away from her before she's finished lol.. So I was just wondering if I just leave her as she is or up to 7oz? Thank you.

I wish mine slept that long lol she occasionally does 9-6 but that’s are lol mine is 17 weeks 4 days and is on 8ozs she weighs 16 04

That sounds like you need to increase by one ounce . I go by the baby and when it seemed like she was finishing pretty much all her bottles and wanting more I upped it x

Thank you for your reply. I am lucky with her sleeping and she naps a lot during the day as well. I was reading the recommendation on the formula box and it said 4-5 months give 7oz and to have 5 bottles in 24hrs, so I'll try her on a bit more and see how she goes. She also drinks the whole bottle in one go and if I try and take it from her to wind she has a screaming fit lol. My partner thinks she should be going 5hrs inbetween but I'm lucky if we get 4hrs between bottles and that's only because she's napping. X

If you up it she will start going four hours between. When I i increased to 8 i spoke to the hv and she said to go by baby rather than box x

Bottles every 3 hours sounds about right. My HV and midwife said if they start draining bottles then it’s time to up it by an ounce. I didn’t really take note of the box as my baby was big when she was born and was pretty hungry xx

Mine was 6wks early but weighed 5lbs2oz and put weight on very quickly. And I thought 3hrs was fine if she went 5hrs she'd have hardly any bottles. She's just had a 7oz bottle and still cried when it was finished lol but ill see how she goes on 7oz and get her weighed in 2wks x.

I agree it can really vary. Sometimes my LG goes 4 hours other times 3 1/2 to 3 depends on what she has been doing / naps etc I’m hoping mine stays at 8oz for a while till I then start weaning as I’m running out of room in the bottles 😂

She's been on 6oz for a while now so it is probably time we upped it. And we only have 3 bottles so constantly having to sterilise them lol. I'm dreading weaning the midwife gave me loads of tips for it though, I don't want her to grow up I lover her at this baby stage lol x

It’s amazing isn’t it! This age is great with all these new things they do as well it’s so wonderful. You are doing great just listen to your baby and you’ll know when you need to do things x

I’d do whatever you think feels right and ignore the tins! My little girl has never taken more than 6oz and only moved onto them once 5 1/2 months old and even then only drank the whole bottle 2 out of the 5 she had a day, one she’d never take more than 3 🙄 We were under the tins advice 😂 Even now at just under 10months she’s dropped to only 2 bottles a day of 6oz or less so not what she should be having there either as they recommend 15oz a day minimum at this age, she’s following the 25th centile nicely though 🤷‍♀️ x

Yeah I have gone for an extra oz. I was only looking at the tin to see what it said as its just a guid as my partner kept going on about how she should be going 5hrs between on 6oz. But she's gone a little bit longer between her bottles today. And when the h.v weighed her and I explained how much she was having she didn't really say anything was just shocked at how much she has shot up in weight since birth, but I think she's now on a steady climb of a 1lb a month. And is it normal for her to want to sleep pretty much all day? When she's awake she's really happy and chatty even shouts really loudly and tries to grab everything or trying to shove her muslin in her gob lol, but she's only awake about an hour or so then wants to sleep between bottles. X

I googled awake times by age and it gives a range, I think at 4 months it’s a hour and a half max before another sleep is needed, we’re now in the 3-4hrs range. If she’s happy when she’s awake then I wouldn’t worry, every baby sleeps differently too, some days mine manages a one hour nap and a two and a half hour one and will still sleep all night! (Although we need to be at home for that magic to happen 😂) Same when we get two crappy half hour naps on the go all day 🤷‍♀️

I also think 3-4hrs is more common for feeds as it’s how long it takes the stomach to empty x

My little one is 14 weeks and is 15lbs. She has a few 7 ounces a day and then a mix of 4-6 ounce bottles. Around 6/7 feeds a day around 35 ounces in total. She sleeps from around 9.30 to 7 also She won’t eat what she doesn’t need a turns when she has had enough. I think they guide us. Your gorgeous little one sounds like she is doing just perfect xx

Yeah shes very healthy and we've had no sickness or anything with her apart from thrush when she was a month old. But she also let's me know when she's had enough either by falling asleep or pushes the bottle away. She's such an easy baby unless she's tired then she'll get really ratty and makes so much noise and fights falling asleep sometimes lol. X

You sound as if you are doing a great job and every baby is different. Just as a comparison my little man is 4 and a half months, so similar age to your little one. He was only 5lb13oz born and now weighs just under 13lb (slightly above his growth curve). He takes 4 bottles a day which are 7 to 8oz, with about 4 hour gap in between. I have also gone on what baby needs and just increased bottle size once my little ones regularly finish their bottles. My first son happened to do exactly as it says on the tin but my second takes in more than he should but puts on weight as he should. Maybe he has a naturally faster metabolism. Who knows! He also sleeps at night from 8pm to 6:30/7am and will have 3 naps in the daytime which equates to another 4 hours sleep.

Since giving her 7oz yesterday and today she's now going 4hrs and doesn't seem so grumpy when it comes to bottle time so she's obviously getting more satisfied now but produces a lot more wet nappies lol x

My little boy is 4 1/2 months is 16 pounds and still only has 4/5 oz every 3/4 hours. If she is getting upset I would up it an ounce. I have never really paid attention to the box to be honest just go by what my baby wants. Btw she is beautiful 💙 xx

Thanks for the reply. She's on 7oz now and it's much better. She's going longer and doesn't seem starving around bottle time now. And thank you 😊 x

my lb is 7 months old and still only has 6oz he wont drink no more than that and he has baby food.... could you not ask your hv if she can start having a bit of baby rice if she getting hungrier. ..

definitely put her up an oz but its worth asking about baby rice as well xx

We've gone up an oz now and it seems a lot better. She seems more satisfied and doesn't get so stressed near bottle time. X

I would try 7ozs, she may start too go every 4 hours then. My little girl was on 7 ozs at 4 months and was going every 4 hours and hasn’t had a night feed from 6 weeks. Just remember your doing a great job x

Thank you. We've upped it and she now goes 4hrs between feeds. But we can only fit 4 bottles a day in as she doesn't get up until 8-9am and after 9pm there's no hope in keeping her awake lol. X
