Weight loss in first trimester

I'm 9 weeks pregnant and in the 5 weeks since I found out I'm expecting I have lost 12lbs. I'm a bit worried that this seems quite a lot to lose in quite a short time. I'm really struggling to eat and what I do eat is really bad food with little nutritional value. Worried that this will be damaging my baby, any advice is welcome!

Try to eat more heathy if you can I know is hard on fist weeks as if you feel sick you stick to what works for you. Makes sure to take parental vitamins, you can get those all in so you make sure you helping baby with that. Is your weight under heathy BMI ? If so maybe speak to your gp otherwise just try to eat healthy even if I’m small portions. You should start feeling better after 12 weeks mark

I was a little overweight before pregnancy, so hopefully it won't be too awful for me to lose weight. It's just the nutrients I'm worried about. I can barely eat anything! Have been taking prenatal vitamins. I hope it doesn't last much longer, I love my food usually!

my experience- I was 9.4st before pregnancy and then lost 9lbs in first trimester because of feeling so nauseous.

Just try your best to eat healthy, but if it's too hard - just live on something. Hopefully nausea will pass soon!x

I lost about 7lb in first trimester due to constant nausea and struggling to eat. I found eating little and often helped and greasy foods made me sick.

I wore sickness bands and found chocolate milk helped me to settle my stomach a little.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one x

With my first I felt very sick till week 16, with second it stopped at w19... One of the worst feelings I ever experienced, specially as it started on week 6... Long 3 months of hating food 🤢

I really really hope that your nausea will disappear very soon, so you can enjoy your pregnancy!x

Oh wow, week 19! That must've been awful 😳 my nausea started at week 5 so only had it for 4 weeks but it is really making me miserable x

Agree. Week 19 sounds late... But then I think of poor women who has it through out the whole pregnancy - makes me feel grateful that it was only as long as it was.

Fingers crossed for you!!!x

That's so true! You hear those awful stories of ladies being sick all the way through, I just hope with everything I have that won't happen to me x

Hi, I had this with my 1st pregnancy. I ended up living off homemade soups and stews that I had blended to a liquid so I could drink it. I only weighed just over 9st at 40 weeks pregnant. My midwife told me that the baby would be fine, it would be me that suffered as baby will just take from you. Have you tried travel sickness wrist bands, they’re meant to help with morning sickness. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy xx

Take your vitamins and its all good. I lost nearly a stone by week 15 or so. Lived off pizza and sugary cereal. Threw up more times a day than was fun.

Try not to worry lovely. As long as you are managing to stay hydrated. I checked with my doc as being sick 2/3 times a day and dry heaving every hour 🤢 they weren't concerned as long as I was keeping some fluid onboard.

I've lost about half a stone and not eating particularly healthy compared to normal diet. At this stage I'm told it's fine though. Try not to worry 😘 x x

Oh bless you!! I am lucky as I haven't been sick much at all, just feel sick and off food. I'm glad it's nothing to worry about, hopefully it might help me gain less weight throughout, got to try to see the silver lining 😂 hope you're feeling well otherwise? x

🤣🤣 that's a good way of looking at it! I was also told sickness peaked at weeks 8 -9 so hopefully we start to feel a bit better soon (unless someone was just trying to make me feel better 🤣).

Apart from the sickness I'm good thank you. Had my first midwife appointment last week. Found it all a little overwhelming but think I was a bit tired, felt like crap and a tad emosh - damn hormones! 🙈 x x x

I relate!! I feel overwhelmed and emotional at the smallest things at the moment. Got our 12 week scan letter through and had a little cry, saw a really cute dog, had a cry 😂 it's bizarre! I definitely feel my nausea is at its worst this past few days! 9+2 now, we must be pretty close in dates x

Mine is awful - nothing works!! Wristbands, crackers, flat lemonade...I've tried it all 🙈 if one more person asks if I've tried ginger biscuits 🤮

We are exactly the same dates at the mo. I'm 9+2 today 😉 x

How lovely!! To be fair, I'm living on ginger biscuits, they don't settle my stomach but they are something that I don't heave at the thought of eating. Hopefully both of us don't have long left of this 🤞🏻🤞🏻

This happened with me, the baby is using up all your essential body fats. This is no harm to you, eat plenty of greens and protein and healthy fats like hard boiled eggs and salmon once a week. Plenty of milk at least a cup a day and keep up your folic acid/ pregnacare vitamins. Don’t worry so much about it as long as baby is growing well enough any changes to your body outside of the baby is a nice side effect :)

Honestly I would love to be able to eat any of those things, but even the thought of it makes me heave 😞 I can try some milk, that doesn't sicken me quite as much as the others, thank you for your advice! x

Have you tried rye crackers and cream cheese (do not use Camembert or blue just like dairylea or primula) ?

Kitcat12 profile image
Kitcat12 in reply to VloandKmp

I can do crackers and Philadelphia at lunch time, my nausea mainly gets worse as the day goes on. I just worry there's not much nutritional value in things like that but I suppose it's better than nothing x

The carbs will keep your energy levels up and the cheese will be good calcium and healthy fats. I however ended up living off pork pies and cheese and pickle and strawberry trifle in the first 4 months of pregnancy due to projectile vomit every meal except those things :(

Oh bless you, it's awful! I'll definitely have a go with some cheese and crackers, thanks for the tip x

Crackers and Philadelphia!! Yes! Thank you, first thing I've eaten and not hated, after 5pm in weeks 👍🏼👍🏼

Hopefully it will settle soon and you can think about eating more healthily then, but at the moment eating something is better than eating nothing so eat whatever you can manage xxx
