Chicco Next to me crib - do you use a waterproof mattress cover with them or just sheets please?

So, only 31 weeks but getting ready with some essentials. We bought the Chicco Next to me crib but am wondering if you put anything under the sheets - such as a mattress protector or waterproof cover in case of leaks or ? I'm assuming nappies will do their job but just in case, or I get it wrong. Little one will be our first, so we're clueless.

Also, can we use any sheets or should we just use fitted Chicco brand?

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I use a waterproof cover and sheets, it’s been a god send for a few sick ups 😊 I bought mothercare sheets that fit the next2me and got some Asda waterproof ones, think they are the cot size 🤔 I love my next2me and she is still in it at just over 7 months (not had the heart to throw her out yet whilst I work out what foods she isn’t allergic to 🙄) x

Thanks loads for help and where to buy. Haven't been in Asda to look yet or mothercare. The chicco ones aren't cheap for just 2, especially if they may be in the wash a lot. I hadn't even considered 'sick ups'. Awww 7 months and still loving her crib. I hope you sort out the allergy situ. Must be difficult. All these things I haven't yet considered. I've so much to learn. Thanks for your help. x

No the chicco ones aren’t cheap, luckily we have managed with just the two and two mattress protectors even with little sick ups and I think we’ve only had 1 nappy leak in that time 😊 Most babies when they are on their back don’t sick up much if at all, in fact if it wasn’t for her reacting to milk she wouldn’t have been sick at all apart from one morning when she decided to properly vomit and needed stripping off afterwards, she was as happy as larry as we changed her though 🤣 I’m debating getting more for her main bed though since it’ll grow with her until she’s out of the toddler bed part and I could imagine if she gets a bug there may be more sheets to wash than I think and she’ll be going to nursery so I’m waiting for diseases 😬 All the best for the rest of your pregnancy, I’m a first time mum too, you find you pretty much wing it, learn and things turn out ok 😊 x

Waterproof mattress protectors are a lifesaver, even with my daughters super chubby thighs there were occasional leaks and a lot of little milky spews

Thank you. I was wondering... what if. Did you get your waterproof mattress anywhere special or can I just find something and cut it down to put under a fitted sheet please? Just had my last scan and I can't tell you how many times they mentioned the word 'Chubby and cute'. Thinking mine will have chubby thighs as well :)

Thats what you want to hear, the chubbier the better 😍

I bought one to fit most standard bassinets but in not familiar with the chicco one you mentioned, probably easier to get one to go with that type of mattress unless theyre super expensive. Even if you get one that is a bit bigger and just tuck any excess under tightly.

Thanks for your suggestions. I've already been told a c-section would be better for me considering the baby putting on weight lol. Will be a learning experience. I just imagine little one pulling off all the sheets but I don't imagine that will happen for a few months anyhow. Will defo be getting the mattress protectors now. Best wishes x

The Lullaby Trust recommends using a waterproof matress protector. I never knew why but I found out today, accidentally, that bacteria can grow on the mattress from it being soiled and be a risk to baby. Who knew?!

Thanks haven't heard of Lullaby Trust, or considered bacteria etc. I just thought it would pose problems trying to clean and dry if a mishap happened. It makes perfect sense now thank you. Will def be buying a couple. Thanks for letting me know. x

You can get a waterproof protector relatively cheaply from amazon. I have two of these as I have twins and they are brilliant. I also bought the additional air mattress (about £20 each) last month and my boys have seemed more comfy since - it allows the air to

Circulate better underneath them as it’s like a mesh topper. I have two boys both with reflux so have 4 mattress protectors and 8 sheets. I put the Chico ones in my amazon basket and kept an eye on the price for a few weeks - they are also a 2 pack so it’s not as bad as you think price wise.

Wow, thanks for your help and advice. I'll take a look on Amazon. I'll also have a look for the air mattress. I've heard the chico mattress is quite hard so someone suggested a topper. Thanks for giving me an idea of how many to buy as well. Sounds daft, but I'm absolutely clueless at the moment but just trying to get prepared a bit in advance. Didn't realise the Chico ones are in a 2 pack. Thanks so much for your help and sharing experience. x

At our first time we used to sheets, but now my husband made waterproof sheet under the mattress. It's quite handy. Especially when we fed our daughter above the bed - it was bad idea. When we use hipp formula (i found it here bestadvisers.co.uk/baby-for... was an dirty occation once. Just imagine that i'm holding my little girl while my husband gives me the bottle with formula. He was staing behind me. And it was a mistake. When he gives me the bottle i turned to take it but the bottle cup wasn't lided as well. Imagine the picture of wet and dirty crib and the empty bottle laing on it. It was so fast! After that we uses waterproof sheets with common shhets under and above it. :)

That would probably happen to us as well. Thank you for your reply. x

Hi we use a chicco next to me for our LG (and love it!- and so does she). We double layer - waterproof sheet, sheet, waterproof sheet, sheet. This way if she has an accident at night we can just whip the wet ones off and there is a sheet ready to go. Weve only had one wee accident (my husband put the nappy on 😂) - most of the time it needs changing is if she’s a bit sick in the night. The mattress is quite fidley to get in so we found that it probably not best to wrestle with it at 3am when you’re already sleep deprived!! I found that the Travel Cot sheets from Asda fit well (£7 for 2 - although actually think they’re on roll back atm) and are just as nice as the Chicco ones. I found that we need about 6 - 8 sheets (especially as we are drying inside at this time of year) so good to have a good stock for rotation.

Aww brilliant thanks for your reply and suggestions. I like the idea of double layering. Will head to Asda to see what they have in stock. Will aim to get around 6-8 as we'll have to dry inside as well. Thank you.
