5 weeks old baby being sick

My 5 week old girl keeps vomiting, we have tried sitting her up for an hour after feeds but still vomits, sometimes it curdled milk other times it’s just milk. Saw a dr yesterday that said it’s fine and not to worry unless she’s losing weight but she gets herself so worked up after being sick, any ideas on how I can prevent the sickness? Thanks

What milk is she on? If it’s not an anti reflux milk you could try one of those or there is a thickener called Carobel you can buy from any pharmacy without a prescription or Amazon for around £5 a box which you can add to the milk at the right consistency for your little one to help stop the sickness. We currently use it with our prescription milk as it’s so thin and our little one suffers from bringing up sick too (albeit small amounts now) x

We’re on cow and gate, dr gave us gaviscon which has thickened up the milk but when she’s sick though her nose she then can’t breathe as it’s filly blocks her nose so don’t want to thicken milk anymore as she seems to suffer more

Bless her. I’m not sure there is much else you can do to stop the sickness if you already have gaviscon. If she’s uncomfortable with it you could ask the dr for some antacid medication for her which will stop it being so acidic so will hurt less when it comes back up x

My baby was like that at 3 weeks and we got gaviscon which made him constipated. He has been on carobel now for over a week which you can use to thicken the milk slightly with a small amount, or make it even thicker and he hasn’t been sick since. Speak to your health visitor as mine was far more helpful than the doctor, and don’t change any formula until you’ve spoken to them.x

Cow and gate do an anti-reflux milk that's supposed to be good! All the best the mama of a fellow lil chunky monkey X

There are ways you can restart your milk supply if you wanted to have a go at breastfeeding xx

As a breast feeding mummy I’d support anyone wanting to go back to breast feeding but it’s not a solution for sickness. My ebf daughter is really sick all day long.

If the sickness is distressing her then you can ask to try ranitidine or Omeprazole (some GPs won’t prescribe this one without a paediatrician appointment). These medications can reduce acid so she’s not in pain from the sickness but they won’t necessarily stop the vomiting.

Alternatively you might want to ask about a dairy free (NOT lactose free) milk if she has any other symptoms of cows milk protein allergy (lots of info online).

Fair point, it helped my son a lot more because he could digest it better and it was not so thick also he took it at his own pace as with everything it can work for some but not for others :) x
