12 week old went under water while we went swimming

Me, my 12 week old and his dad went swimming on Saturday 18/05/2019.

i think my 12 week old swallowed some water as he did go under for a couple seconds and started crying and coughing when he came back up, I'm really anxious, worried and watching him constantly as I read up about dry drowning. Is there anything I need to watch out for?

This wouldn't be dry drowning, but secondary drowning. Secondary drowning is caused my inflammation and swelling in the lungs. If this is the case then baby would more than likely already be showing signs like a persistent cough/choking, tired and irritable yet unable to sleep, and possibly vomiting.

Even though this is extremely rare and would usually happen within a matter of hours, I would recommend taking baby to see a doctor. A doctor will be able to listen to the chest for signs of swelling the lungs, i.e. crackles and rapid breathing. Everything is more than likely fine, but better safe than sorry.

If it helps, in our 3-6 month old baby swimming lessons they have us submerge the babies for a count of three. It feels like forever when they’re under! But they all cope fine.
