Hi ladies.. my little one weighed just under 6lb and is now 10 days old. He’s lost a little weight which I’ve been told is normal. Just wondered how many ml of milk should I be feeding him and how often. Can’t help but think I’m doing something wrong. Thk you xx

The weight loss is perfectly normal. I've read it happens because while in the womb the baby is getting growth hormones from you and after birth baby is adjusting to producing their own growth hormones. Sorry I can't help with the actual question, but I'm sure you're doing great anyway.

Yep it’s normal for a bit of weight loss initially. I think it took a week or two before my baby was back up to his birth weight so as long as he’s steadily gaining now I’m sure you’re doing fine. My midwife didn’t discharge me until he had regained the weight.

Assuming you’re bottle feeding if you’re asking about how many mls? Can’t answer that for sure as my boy was breastfed but I think at that point he was feeding at least every couple of hours. If it’s formula you’re giving, does it have some guidance on the box? Their tummies are so small it’s just little and often at this stage based on hunger cues (rooting, sucking hands etc). I’m sure you’re doing great xx

It’s normal for babies to loose some weight at first. Don’t worry about that!

Babies should be fed on demand. So watch out for the rooting signals. This is things like turning their head to the side, to look for boob, sucking hands or opening their mouth. They might feed anywhere between 15-45 mins (roughly) every couple of hours or sometimes more. Make sure you left them finish on one side before offering the second side. If you are giving any bottles then make sure they are paced fed and the baby decides how much to take, don’t make them finish a bottle x

Unfortunately every baby is different, you just need to look for hunger cues like the others have said. We used to make say 60mls of formula and if she was still hungry make 30mls more and saw how much she took. You’ll soon get the hang of what size bottle to make. Don’t worry about what’s on the side of the box either, our little girl should according to the box be only having 4 bottles a day of 240ml....yeah right! She drinks up to 180ml (sometimes as little as half that) 5-6times a day (only recently had some 5 a days). However she is tracking her percentile nicely so therefore is regulating her own intake to maintain growth and not loose weight or put too much on. Trust your baby to lead you and don’t force them to take in more than they want x

Yes it’s normal for baby to loose a little weight. If I remember correctly around 5% or less of their birth weight is normal. My little girl was drinking around 2-3oz every 2-3 hours when she was that young. Sorry I only work in oz.

I’m sure your doing brilliantly though xx

Every baby is different, my baby wasnt drinking anywhere near what was reccomended for the first 3 weeks (sometimes only 30ml) but he is now 11 weeks doing 7oz a feed!
