Breast pumps

Hey ladies, just wondering if any of you have any ideas for an electric breast pump. I want to try breast feeding at least but would likely partner to be able to feed as well... what would you recommend? Xx

Tbh we've had this conversation and decided not to buy one until we know baby will take breast and then get one afterwards. I've even packed a couple of premade formulas just in case she can't feed from me immediately there are any issues. My friends bought an expensive medela one and didn't end up using it xx

I’d agree with you, I bought a hand one as they are a lot cheaper and then bought an electric one later, didn’t work out for us in the end so I now have a pump that’s been used for 3 weeks only 😂 Most items can be delivered pretty quick anyway if you need one. I got a Nuby single breast one, worked well and only cost me £60 from Aldi online, some can be eyewateringly expensive so glad I didn’t pay more 😊 x

I'd wait as others have said. Also, what works for one doesn't always fit another & some women find they can't really express at all. I've got a tommee tippee & it's good, but it causes me problems on the left boob so I can only express from the right.

I will recommend a silicon pump though. Hakkaa or nature bond. They are gentle and catch the let down from the other breast while your feeding from the other x

I would second the Hakkaa silicone pump - it’s only about £15. I’m currently breastfeeding my 7.5 month old daughter and I bought an Ardo Calypso double breast pump (for about £120+ 🤦🏻‍♀️) early in my breastfeeding journey and have hardly used it. The Hakkaa is great because you can put it onto the opposite breast while you’re feeding to catch any milk - multitasking! X

You can rent a hospital grade pump from Ana Wiz, which will cost about £40/ month (please check) or I believe you can rent it from the maternity ward after labour. However, over here, they only open Mom- Friday so if you’re to be discharge during weekend, speak to your midwife in advance that you wish to rent a pump. Over here is like £30 refundable deposit.

I was very lucky as I was producing lots of milk therefore the manual Avent (Asda on sale ~£15) worked a charm for me. I had no problem to trigger the letdowns and could express around 1oz a minute. So it was a 5-10min job to collect those 5-10oz.

I have a Medela swing. Can express just fine but baby won’t take milk from a bottle! She’s 9 weeks now and we have been trying since she was six weeks old. I’m glad I didn’t spend money on my pump, a friend gave it to me. If money is an issue I’d be tempted to buy a cheap manual pump to make sure a) you breastfeed and b) your baby will take a bottle before you spend loads xx

I love my Ardo Calypso. I am still breastfeeding my little boy at 8 1/2 months, but like having the freedom to express milk so that my OH can put him to bed. It's also proving to be brilliant now that he is starting to go to nursery and can still benefit from breastmilk there too. I did have a second hand single pump, but when I realised that I was using it every day and taking ages I took the plunge and bought the double pump. It saves me so much time!

I have the Medela and works well for us my boy takes the boob and the bottle well but I prefer to just give him boob (so I get more cuddles 😂) but everyone different xx
