Fuming at sonographer

Hi ladies, I had a scan today and told the sonographer I didn’t want to know the gender . He referred to the baby as ‘he’ when I questioned him he said they refer to babies ‘he or she’ as he wouldn’t like to say it. Is he lying to me or is this normal? Xx

Hi there

They do refer to the baby as he or she sometimes. My midwife once listened to the heartbeats and said ‘both boys are doing great’ (I was having twins) When I explained I didn’t know what I was having she got all flustered and said I had referred to them as boys. I was paranoid she had let slip but I had two girls 😂 so I wouldn’t worry. Xx

Ohh I see.... it’s so annoying tho as I wasn’t even expecting a scan today either as was only going to see the doctor for a check up 😊

I was warned that this could happen too so I think it's normal. And breathe...😁 How did the scan go? xx

Well I wasn’t expecting a scan as that’s booked for Friday. I had an appointment with docs check blood pressure etc and then he said I’d get a scan. I specifically said I didn’t want to know the gender at least 3x so why the hell would you said ‘he’ so annoying. Scan seemed ok but it wasn’t that detailed but baby was there heart beating etc so seemed fine and said it’s a low risk pregnancy.... my partner thinks the sonographer is trying to confuse me 🙈

I had a scan last week as I’m high risk 32 week , but even though I know the gender the sonographer didn’t ask me if I knew gender etc as it was a growth scan and she kept calling my baby he constantly, but luckily I know what I’m having as it is a BOY , I think some do slip up and hope you don’t cotton on the only reason I never said anything is that I was ok with knowing! Xx

Ahhh I see.. congrats on your baby boy xxx

They usually just refer to he/she as baby the times I’ve been never the sex even when we found out.

Yup. Mine was a he until we actually found out we are having a girl. They just use whatever he or she but doesn't mean they know gender

Ohh good... so useful to know... xx

They have to specifically look at the genitals to know the gender, and that area isnt scanned as part of a routine appointment so it could have been a default thing for that sonographer, all babies are 'he' until proven otherwise kind of thing. We wanted to know with my son, and a good thing too as he pointed his junk straight at the wand/ scanner as soon as it touched my belly!

They do this many staff including midwives will assign am auto gender to babies some will automatically call baby she or he. It tends to be I fluencef by the majority gender lot their kids. Some will say baby instead but it can be hard not automatically say a gender I'd referred to mine as he since I knew I was pregnant. How far along are you?
