Urine sample

Been having quite bad morning sickness so finally been to drs who requested a urine sample. He tested it for ketones and said before giving me any anti sickness they would dip test it. Just had a phone call requesting a further urine sample to send off and they’re giving me a prescription.

Should I be worried for what they are testing for, what if they say I’m not pregnant, I’m 8 weeks and had most symptoms, head aches, going to the toilet a fair bit, loads of sickness, and had three positives tests but so scared they will test to and tell me what I don’t want to hear.

I did have a water infection a few weeks ago so wondering if that hasn’t cleared up properly, I did have antibodies but these don’t always work.

Can anyone put my mind at rest and or has experience of this.

Thanks

I’m a GP and would not routinely do a pregnancy test for someone reporting sickness in pregnancy. Most practices don’t even have them on site. The ketones test is to make sure that you are not too dehydrated and maybe later the GP realised that they should also send your urine off to make sure you don’t have an infection so needs another sample from you. Also depends if your first sample was in a sterile container or not. Hope the medication makes you feel better xx

I am not sure why the dr tested for key tones before giving you anti sickness meds because they test for starvation and you can still be dehydrated without them showing because you could have kept some food down that morning! but glad to hear you’ve got the tablets . The pregnancy sickness support charity has guidance for patients & GPs if you have any more problems and there are forums on there too. I hope the tablets help. The first line treatments can make you very drowsy as they tend to be anti histamines so be careful if you are feeling well enough to leave the house as you may not be safe to drive. There are other ones they can try if they aren’t working for you.

It’s quite usual to do urine tests to check that you don’t have a uti in pregnancy so it could have just been that x

the doctors are testing your ketone levels as if they're high it means you're suffering from Hyperemisis Gravidarum hence the anti-sickness tabs.

during my pregnancy i had this done routinely, i wouldnt worry yourself though.

in regards to the sickness we was told to eat little and often and dont drink and eat at the same time - try abd wait 15-20 minutes after a meal to drink.

i wish you all the luck in your pregnancy x
