I was rushed to hospital a week after birth with excessive bleeding I lost around 4 litres of blood and had to have a blood transfusion and all sorts I’m now 7 weeks PP and still don’t actually know what happened! I’m so confused and worried as I could have died by the amount of blood I lost - has anyone ever been through this ?

My Mam lost lots of blood and clots after having my older sister and was rushed into hospital I think some of the placenta was still in her. I hope your feeling ok now and are enjoying your baby xx

Yes this is what they said it was an an issue with my stitches so they re stitched me , feeling better now just nervous incase I bleed again and now super scared of hospitals sounds silly I used to love a&e programmes now I can’t bare to watch theatre rooms :(

You’ll be fine just look after yourself take your time. I was in getting pregnancy tissue pulled out my cervix just over a week ago I don’t want to see the EPU again. I can’t watch one born every min again after mc for the 2nd time it’s just too much. Also my 12yrs old broke her arm so I’ve been in and out of hospital for weeks totally sick.

Sadly bleeding after giving birth is fairly common. My friend ended up in icu due to this. But that is the reality of childbirth... Just count ourselves lucky that we live in a modern era where these things can be managed with a free health service.

I lost 2.7 litres as a secondary post party haemorrhage 2 weeks after birth (your body only has 4.5 litres in total) and nearly died. I was in hospital for a week and was on strong antibiotics for a week at home plus, iron tablets for 6 months and tranxemic (sic) acid. My milk also dried up because it’s the blood that makes the milk and I’d lost too much. Sadly it didn’t return. They tried an ultrasound, smear test and did blood tests for infection whilst I was in hospital but nothing was conclusive. As Roxannacar says, sometimes these things just happen. I continued to bleed heavily and consistently until baby was sixteen weeks old and it finally stopped!

We were absolutely petrified second pregnancy that it would happen again but I was under consultant care who admistered drugs to quickly retract my uterus during the third stage of labour and checked the placenta herself and I was absolutely fine. I understand your fear, I have never had feelings of fear of dying before and it haunts me a bit still but it does get easier and I’m so glad it didn’t affect my having baby 2! Wishing you a speedy recovery! Xx
