Hi, I am 28 weeks today with my first baby and had a routine check up and blood results. All is fine with my bloods. However I am concerned as I haven't had my urine tested since 12 weeks and I've not been given a glucose test. I've not been weighed at all and generally all my appointments are about 5 minutes.
Can I ask if this is normal/common? Or should I be getting more out of these appointments?

Seeming it’s your first I would of thought they might be a bit longer , if you have things to ask your midwife write them down and ask when your there that way it will be longer than 5 minutes , they used to be 15 mins ! They don’t always weigh you on every appointment but they should do bloods ask how you are and measure bump ! As for your urine maybe it’s all clear if your unhappy about it ask if everything is ok with results either on next visit or ring them ! Xx
they dont do bloods at every appointment, only certain ones and if you are under consultant care they will do them at consultant appointments instead. The glucose tests are usually only done if theres a history of diabetes or you have a raised bmi. It all depends on if your under midwife led or consultant led care. things tend to differ depending on which you are on ive been on both before

Thanks, looking at the list it shows I should have had my urine tested for protein several times by this point but like I said they have only taken one urine sample from me at 12 weeks.
I think it's standard to test urine for glucose and protein at every antenatal appointment, blood tests are not a regular thing though. They usually only start to measure your bump at 25 weeks, or 28 if it's not your first baby, am not sure about being weighed. It should say in your blue maternity folder what to expect and what the midwife should go through at every appointment.
The best thing when it comes to urine is when you book in at reception desk to say you’ve arrived ask for a urine tube and go to the toilet before going into the midwife appointment and take your sample with you they usually test it there and then ! Xx
I had my urine tested at every midwife appointment. I was weighed but only because I was under a consultant otherwise I don't think I would of been weighed at all. Have you spoke to your midwife about your glucose test? Xx
Blood tests done twice during pregnancy at booking and 28 weeks unless problems. Blood pressure & Urine should be checked for protein at ever appointment. Never been weighed apart from my first appointment. Are you concerned that you've not gained any weight? If so o would raise it, but there is no set weight gain, and tummy measurements are a better telltale.
I had to have a glucose tolerance test anyways cause of my high bmi, but these are not done on everybody only if you fit certain criteria or they find glucose in your urine (which in your case hasn't been tested!) . I would ask why your urine is not being checked as really that should be done each time.
I had urine tested at every appointment (midwife and consultant) but not bloods, and they didn’t measure bump until about 25 weeks. I think I got weighed at the initial booking appointment but then not again until about 36 weeks.
I did have glucose test but only quite late on (maybe 32 weeks) and that was because baby was measuring big which can be a sign of diabetes.
If you’re just under community midwife I’d be asking whether they should be doing urine tests. Also, even though I was under a consultant due to IVF, my community midwife appointments were still at least 30 mins so not sure why yours would only be 5.
Like someone has said already, check your folder to see what you should expect from each appointment and list any questions you have about it before you go in x
If you want your urine tested as soon as you arrive you take a container from reception and go to the toilet. They expect you to just do and if you haven't done it they won't ask you for it. At every appointment I've had urine checked and blood pressure checked except on the two occasions I've had two appointments less than a week apart where I said "No". I'm consultant led but have seen midwives as well.
That's not right they should be asking automatically. As urine tests indicate towards many problems. It's not a case of if you don't ring and them.one they won't ask. I'm on my 3rd and I've always been asked an my mum used to be a midwife and she said they should always be asking for urine samples
Agreed when I've not had time to do it before they always asked to go after and always specifically got asked!
Different NHS areas different procedures.
It is the receptionists who tell you take the urine containers in my area in both the places I've had to attend. The midwives and others then don't ask you if you don't give it to them - though in my case they can see I had an appointment 4 days ago where it was checked.
It has nothing to do with receptionists in either ofnthe two different trusts I've given birth under. We don't have a receptionist like that as out midwives ate based out of the children's centres so their receptionists don't deal with he midwife stuff
As I stated before different NHS areas different procedures.
The childrens centres in my area are either attached to schools or voluntary organisations. (I've volunteered with the latter.) The midwifery clinics are attached to larger GP surgeries, including my own, or hospitals of different sizes.
I say "area" as even though you are expected to go to your nearest trust so nearest midwifery clinics you don't have to. My two nearest trusts share resources so they may book you into midwifery clinics nearer the other trust just so you get appointments on time. Though in certain postcodes the midwife clinics openly cover both trusts. Also some staff e.g. consultants work in both trusts.
I had all my midwife appointments in childrens centres and they always had a box full with containers for urine samples on their counter. They always reminded me to take one and use it. The next time you have an appointment ask your midwife to test your urine. The only time they checked my weight was at the booking appointment and 12week scan in hospital. Bloods were taken twice during pregnancy; at booking appointment and 28 week appointment.
Midwife should be checking urine at every appointment especially for glucose and protein. Speak up! X
