Weaning - baby porridge

I'm due to wean my baby soon and noticed normal porridge is about £1.20/kg and baby porridge (ground up with added vitamins) is like £16/kg.

I wanted to know if people ground up normal porridge for weaning or what brand/ supermarket is best value.

Hello! I used regular porridge, grounded up in the beginning and now only as it comes from the package. We do use the cheapest one meaning the supermarket brands. Good luck in this new phase

Thanks. Did you need to dry the porridge oats out first? My mum said they are damp and don't grind well and they need to be dried out in the sun first?

We use oats, the one's you buy for yourself, they are already dry, we make it with water but you can use formula milk or milk expressed...

Sun does only good to food that is planted and watered. Please don't put any food in the sun. It kills and deforms its nutrients. Oats grind very easily and well as they come from the bag. They are the best thing you can give to a baby or to anyone.

I'm trying baby led weaning just started this week ... with veggie sticks rather than purée ... currently we are sucking stuff lol but she seems to love it!

I loved doing baby led weaning with both of mine. Enjoy!

Hi Roxann how old is your baby ? I really want to try this but very nervous about my little girl who is 7 months old choking.

Turned 6 months last week. She gags a lot but that's normal. They're actually a lot more resilient than you think. I had been boiling or dreaming veggies and letting her mess with them lol she seems to enjoy it v much and over the past few days I've noticed her hand eye coordination are already improving

Great thank you for that I’m going to try it see how she goes. Do you just give her veggies steamed soft for lunch and dinner. My little girl is still having 5 or 6oz bottles still aswell as her food does yours ?

She only has tiny bits once a day as we only started last week... takes them a while to

Build up, but most of the calories are more milk for first year of their life.

I breast feed so no idea how much she drinks!

Great thank you for the info I feel much better about it now 😊

I wouldn't worry about porridge, it just acts as a filler and grains are a bit harsh on babies tummies until closer to the year mark.

But if you do insist on giving it, they are all pretty much the same.

I am a nursery nurse and leader of a baby room. Im also mum of three, one 11, one 6 and on 2. Ready break or supermarket smooth oats is exactly the same in consistency. Tesco and morrisons do this in a reasonable sized box that lasts ages in small portions suitable for babies and toddlers. I use this for my little girl with added fruit... she prefers banana.

Baby porridge is expensive and hardly any in the box especially if you have a greedy little one.
