Hi had our 20w scan on Friday and were told an umbilical cord normally has 3 vessels, mine only has 2. She checked all organs and spine etc..and said they all seemed fine and growing ok but to be on the safe side, she ordered 2 extra scans at 28w and 34w but now im shitting myself. Does anyone have an experience with this?? Ty

Hi. I have not experienced this myself but apparently it's the most common umbilical cord 'abnormality' and most of the time the baby is perfectly healthy. If at 20 weeks no issues were seen then it's looking good. Just think, those two vessels have got your baby this far :). They are doing the right thing giving you extra scans but it's just to be on the safe side. Try to see them as an opportunity of seeing your baby again. I know it's so hard not to worry, I was a nervous wreck during my pregnancy but as I say, those vessels appear to be doing enough for your little one and with the baby looking good at 20 weeks the odds are in your favour!

Best of luck for the rest of your pregnancy!

Hi,

I ve not personally had experience with this but I know someone who has. She had the same only two vessels and her daughter is now a healthy 20 year old.

We had an issue at our 20 weeks scan where they said the ventricle on our daughters brain was enlarged so I know how scary it is when they tell you something is ‘abnormal’. My best advice would be if you have any concerns talk to your midwife, even if it’s everyday. They will understand your worry and help you through. The extra scans will hopefully provide you with some reassurance that baby is doing fine.

Try not to worry and good luck x

I had to get 3 additional scans for another reason and it really did help me a lot. It gave me peace of mind and helped prevent lots of worrying. They really do look after you well - you’re in good hands!
