Pain in my one breast

Hi I have been breast feeding my son for the past 11 months and yesterday I started having pain in my one breast while we were out shopping and when we got home it felt warm with a red patch on it, I haven't experienced this before and unsure what it is, but have been feeding my son still from the same breast as also feels very full can anyone advise me please

You could have mastitis, which is an inflammation of the breast. I'd make sure you empty the breast as much as you can each time (express too if needs me) and try and massage it. If you start feeling unwell, getting temps, or red area doesn't settle I'd see your gp as you might need antibiotics

Hi catz, yes could be blocked duct. It needs heat to melt it, the best thing to do is to take a nice hot bath and use baby oil to massage the breast after (from the nipple back up towards your chest) plus keep feeding baby from that side as you would do normally until it goes (might need to do a couple of baths a day. If you start to feel unwell or already are (flu like symptoms) then it could have already turned into mastitis which taking paracetamol along with Ibuprofen will help as well as bath & massage.

Thank you for your advice I will definitely do that, I am still feeding him from the side that is sore which seems to be relieving it so hopefully I have sorted it before needing to see the doctor

Really pleased to hear catz, its worked a treat in the past for me too. There's nothing worse than feeling under the weather with a little baby to look after.

hi keep nursing as much as you can on that breast,to clear the blockage. I've had this loads of times and it's easy to clear yourself. When you've fed massage in a downward direction to promote the flow in the right direction. I used heat patches inside my bra, and it u blocked after about a day and a half. Also don't freak out if your baby gags or splutters if it unblocks while she's feeding. There's a blockage behind it that's getting released, much like pulling out a plug. The milk comes out faster and sometimes it made DS gag. There were also stringy bits of milk too that looked yuk but the doc told me completely normal! 👍 high five for doing it so long! I bfed all mine until they were 18 months. I think it's a very special part of the process 😊 well done! Xx
